Watsonians and Clydesdale Western level pegging in women’s indoor competition
Watsonians women started off the day with a comfortable 6-1 win over Edinburgh University, aided by the fact that the students listed only six players and no substitutes. But it was Edinburgh who took the lead through Katie Brett, that was the end of their scoring contribution.
By the interval Watsonians were 4-1 up, Ellie Wilson got the first, followed by a penalty corner from Emily Dark, and then a quick-fire double from Mairi Drummond. Two goals in as many minutes from Katie MacCallum and Sarah Jamieson in the second half took the total to half a dozen.
Then Inverleith opened their account this season by beating Dundee Wanderers by the odd goal in five. But it was the Taysiders who led 2-1 at the interval, Ellie Hutcheson opened for the Edinburgh side in five minutes but Wanderers retaliated through Amy Snelle and a penalty corner conversion by Lucy Williamson. The second half witnessed a reversal of fortunes with Bopi Monte levelling from the spot and the winner coming a minute later from Katie Swanson.
Clydesdale Western retained pole position with a 3-1 win over third placed Wildcats. The league leaders seemed to have things in hand when Margery Justice scored from open play and then from a penalty corner for a two goal lead at the break. Back came the Wildcats eight minutes into the second half through Olivia Finch but the champions held their nerve and Fiona Semple settled the issue with a goal from a set piece.
Edinburgh CALA also picked their first victory of the season with a narrow 4-3 win over Grove Menzieshill who remain pointless. The Dundonians led at the interval through Sophia Donald, but seven minutes into the second half CALA had taken a 2-1 lead through Emma Davie and Cheryl Valentine. It was a ding dong affair after that – Donald made it 2-2, CALA`s Caitlin McIntosh converted a penalty corner for 3-2, and then Donald scored again for her hat-trick to tie it up at 3-3. However, with just over a minute left Angela Davie snatched the winner for the Edinburgh side.
Then came the first draw of the indoor season, Inverleith and Edinburgh University settled for 3-3 in the end. The students had a narrow single goal lead at the interval through Jika Nyirenda, but seven minutes into the second half Jenn Veitch and Ellie Hutcheson put Inverleith 2-1 in front, only for Nyirenda to level at 2-2. There was a further exchange of goals, Inverleith`s Bopi Monte made it 3-2 but Katie Brett scored a late equaliser for the students.
Watsonians completed their second victory of the day with a 5-1 win over Dundee Wanderers, courtesy of a first half hat-trick by Sarah Jamieson inside five minutes. However, a minute into the second half a spot conversion by Jess Martin pulled the score back to 3-1. But any Tayside revival was stifled by a double from Katherine Holdgate for a comfortable winning score.
Wildcats made amends for their earlier reversal with an 8-0 defeat of Edinburgh CALA, a result that confirmed their third place in the table. The result was effectively sealed in the opening nine minutes with goals from Lucy Findlay, Corrie Hay and Alex Stuart. The Cats advanced their tally to five by the interval, Stuart got her second with Zara Kennedy getting the other right on half-time.
The goal flow continued in the second half with Stuart getting another two to make four in total for the match and Findlay completed the scoring for her own second.
Clydesdale continued their unbeaten sequence with a comfortable 4-0 win over bottom side Grove. Margery Justice opened the scoring but it was only until the last two minutes of the first half before the champions confirmed their advantage with goals from Tamilla Matchett and Justice again at a penalty corner for 3-0. There was only one goal in the second half through Millie Steiger.
Watsonians drew level with Clydesdale at the top of the table after a 7-1 victory over Wildcats in their final game of the day. Sarah Jamieson set the scene in the first minute with an open play goal but Kate Holmes levelled for the Cats at a penalty corner. The Cats equaliser didn`t last long, by the interval a double from Mairi Drummond pushed Watsonians into a 3-1 lead at half-time.
It was only Watsonians who added to their tally in the second half, Jamieson completed her hat-trick as did Drummond to advance the score to 6-1 before Emily Dark pitched in her penny piece with the final goal for a magnificent seven.
In the final game of a long stint Dundee Wanderers held their concentration to see off Edinburgh CALA 4-2 to confirm their fourth place status. It was 2-0 at the interval, Lucy Williamson opened in seven minutes to be followed by Jess Martin. The Taysiders then added to their score line in the second half through Sophie Mason and Williamson again before CALA suddenly came to life with late strikes from Angela and Emma Davie, but not enough to alter the destiny of the three points.
