Wanderers take the initiative
VWS Dundee Wanderers are in line for a hat-trick of
Subway indoor national league titles following back to back 5-2
victories over rivals Grove Menzieshill and Milne Craig Western at
Forthbank today.
In the Grove clash a Julie Bryce pass on to Amy Rowan provided
the opener, somewhat against the run of play, for a 1-0 half-time
lead. Early in the second half Rachael Osborne added a second
before captain Kat Cameron pulled one back for Grove. With
four minutes remaining a long ball from Sammy Sangster found Rowan
who made it 3-1.
A diving deflection by Jaime Lyon pulled one back for Grove but
up stepped Sangster, she won the penalty corner and then proceeded
to convert it for 4-2. In the dying seconds Julie Bryce made
it 5-2 with a late open play strike to tie up the contest.
In the final game of the day against Western, a pass from Bryce
set up Rowan for the opener for Wanderers in five
minute. By the interval Western were level when Kareena
Marshall struck from a penalty corner.
In the second half Rowan scored from a narrow angle to make it
2-1 and minutes later a last touch from Becky Ward put Wanderers
3-1 ahead. With three minutes remaining a pass from
Sangster was picked up by Bryce who made it 4-1, and although
Marshall pulled one back for Western at a penalty corner, a late
Rachael Osborne strike sealed the three points for Wanderers.
In the opening round of fixtures the top sides came through
unscathed, it started with Kelburne`s 5-0 win over Granite City
Wanderers, Amy Hislop nothing a hat-trick. Western
scored nine against Clydesdale, four goals for Kareena Marshall
here, Dundee Wanderers repeated the result over Grove`s second
string, this time four for Julie Bryce, and finally there were nine
also for Grove with teenager Louise Campbell netting three.
Western then defeated Kelburne 4-0, Nicky Skrastin and Fiona
Bruce scored in the first half with Marshall converting two penalty
corners after the interval. Kelburne then fell 8-0 to
Grove.
CAKA gave moved to a point of Kelburne following a 5-2 win over
Grove`s second string, Emma Watson scored a hat-trick. Newly
promoted Granite City Wanderers emerged out of the relegation zone
after seeing off Clydesdale 4-3, Hazel Irvine picking up a
double.
