Wanderers relegated
EUROPEAN CLUB CHAMPIONS CHALLENGE (WOMEN) –
WETTINGEN (SWITZERLAND)
In the women`s tournament in Switzerland VWS Dundee
Wanderers finally paid the price of a heavily reduced squad when
they were relegated after losing out to host side Rotweiss
Wettingen 4-1 in a penalty
shoot-out.
In normal time the Taysiders were always chasing the game
against the Swiss and simply run out of legs towards the end as
most players did not have the luxury of a substitute
break. Wettingen went one up but Jenny Gerrard
equalised with a reverse stick sweep. The Swiss
restored their lead with a penalty corner rebound. Before the
interval Wanderers were back on level terms again with a narrow
angle shot from Jude McMullan to tie the scores at 2-2.
Wettingen took a 3-2 lead in the second half, but the Scots
refused to surrender and Sam Sangster equalised with a direct
strike at a penalty corner. The game finished at 3-3 and the
tie moved into a penalty shoot-out.
Wanderers never got to grips with the drama of the occasion,
Julie Bryce was the only scorer, Fiona Plain and Rachael Osborne
failed to beat the goalkeeper, and the Swiss saved themselves from
the drop with a 4-1 win.
