Wanderers eye a medal in Wettingen
VWS Dundee Wanderers travel to Switzerland with high
hopes of a medal and promotion from the women`s European Club
Champions Challenge over this weekend.
It will be a tough assignment for the Taysiders as they come up
against Lille MHC (France), Prague (Czech Republic) and SC Amiscora
(Italy) in the pool competition, and need to finish in the top two
to reach Monday`s promotion play-offs.
International goalkeeper Carmin Dow is optimistic.
“Our main strength is our team spirit and the fact that we have so
many talented players within the squad. We also have a number
of people who have experienced a lot of European hockey.”
Although Dow did admit there had been certain problems in the
preparation for the tournament. “The build-up has not
been ideal, so long since the end of the domestic league, but we
have been training hard and have played practice matches against
the Scotland under 18s and under 16s as well as our men`s
team.”
But Wanderers will lack strength in depth with only 13 players
available for the Swiss trip, perhaps the biggest loss is midfield
playmaker Vikki Bunce who is still involved in the GB squad.
But also missing will be teenager Jess Ross, she is included in the
Scotland under 16 squad for a four nations tournament in Germany,
the influential Amy Rowan who is making wedding arrangements and
Heather Elder, not yet recovered from long-term injury.
Further, the Taysiders have had an indifferent domestic season,
finishing in mid-table and losing the Scottish Cup to Dundee
neighbours Grove Menzieshill. Some of Wanderers` problems
stemmed from parting company with coach Iain Strachan in
mid-season, Mabel Neish will stand in for the tournament.
Wanderers open their pool competition with a match against
French champions Lille tomorrow, a win here would do a lot for the
Taysiders` confidence.
