Victory for Scotland U21 Women over Wales at Peffermill
Scotland U21 Women 2-1 Wales U21 Women
Scotland U21 Women won the opening match of their test series with Wales 2-1 at Peffermill. Neave Halliday and Jessica Barr provided the goals in an excellent team performance.
It was an even start to the contest with both sides playing the ball confidently. The first opportunity was a half chance for Wales but the Scottish defence dealt with the danger well.
Right at the end of the quarter the Scots earned a penalty corner and Ellie Mackenzie’s strike from the top of the circle fizzed just wide of the mark.
In the second quarter it felt like a goal for Scotland was coming, and it didn’t take them long to find the net. First Anna Mae Wennart went on a mazy run into the circle, showing great stick skills, and won a penalty corner.
It was from the corner that Neave Halliday opened the scoring through a close range finish on the rebound to make it 1-0.
A short time later Scotland doubled their advantage. A lovely composed finish by Jessica Barr put Scotland 2-0 ahead after a swift counter down the right.
Wales then pulled one back on the counter and Scotland took a 2-1 lead into half time.
Midway through the third quarter and Scotland nearly bagged a third through two powerful penalty corner efforts by Lucy Williamson – the first was well saved and the second zipped just wide.
Wales came out fighting in the final quarter on the hunt for an equaliser but the Scots were a constant threat on the counter.
Mackenzie had an effort cleared off the line as Scotland came close to putting the game to bed, but a third goal wasn’t required and Scotland clocked up a solid win.
