Uphill for Wanderers in Vienna
EUROHOCKEY INDOOR CLUB CUP (WOMEN) –
VIENNA
The uphill nature of the task facing VWS Dundee in the
elite European Indoor Club Cup in Vienna became reality when the
Scots lost 6-2 to Gintra Strekte from Lithuania in a rather
physical encounter.
After an early chance to Joss Robb the Taysiders went three down
to a Gintra side that was full of Lithuanian national
players. Wanderers pulled on back before the interval, Amy
Rowan`s penalty corner shot was illegally saved on the line by a
defender and Sam Sangster converted from the spot.
In the second half the Dundonians had their chances with two
penalty corners and new fewer than six shots at goal. After
Gintra went 4-1 ahead, Wanderers struck again with a good drive and
finish by Rowan. Goalkeeper Carmin Dow was then exposed in
quick Gintra counter-attacks and the Lithuanians scored twice more
to finish 6-2 in front.
SUBWAY NATIONAL LEAGUE
In a midweek game Edinburgh University consolidated their fourth
spot in the women`s Subway national league with a 2-2 draw with
CALA Edinburgh. Scotland striker Sam Judge opened for
the students, CALA then moved into a 2-1 lead but in the second
half Laura Protheroe levelled the scores and a share of the
points. The result lifts CALA further away from the
relegation zone.
