Uddingston Hockey Club have strengthened their in-school development programme by securing the services of full-time youth coaches Tom Hyndman and John Platt for another year.

The South Lanarkshire club had employed the duo on a part-time basis for the first of three years of its successful in-school programme, but thanks to increasing club membership numbers at youth level, extended full-time contracts were established with the two coaches in 2014, and have been renewed for 2015 with the launch of the new 2015/16 schools programme due this month.
Increasing club membership is now a key performance indicator for funding from sportscotland, the national sports agency, and Uddingston have demonstrated success in this area.
Steven Percy, Director of Hockey, said, “The club has a simple aim of providing hockey for as much of the community as possible while providing them with a clear pathway to play social or competitive hockey at all levels within home grown teams based out of its grounds in Uddingston, which will also benefit greatly in September 2015 with the opening of its very own water based synthetic pitch”.
The club will be providing in-school taster sessions all year round for Primary 1 to 7 and Secondary S1 to S4 boys & girls across 12 primary and 5 Secondary schools throughout South and North Lanarkshire and the East End of Glasgow.
As a result, participating schools are running up to three lunch time or after school clubs leading to all schools taking part in end of term festivals and inter school league matches. Pupils are encouraged to join Uddingston Club sessions and junior / senior teams with the aim of increasing club membership.
Overall the coaches will work with over 14,000 school pupils during the coming school year with the club currently in final stages of adding a further coach to the in-school programme with a newly appointed Hockey Modern Apprentice.
Club vice-president David Goodfellow added, “Overall the club is going from strength to strength with over 200 youth kids playing in teams from under 6s to under 16s, both boys and girls, and adults currently aged up to 67 playing in one of the 5 gents teams and 3 ladies teams.
“The club would also like to thank various parties for their support in developing not only the in-school programme but also the club as a whole. These include our new Youth Partner Palazzo Kitchens & Bathrooms and Scottish Hockey, sportscotland, South Lanarkshire, North Lanarkshire, Glasgow City councils, Active Schools Teams and all the schools for letting us invite their pupils to try out our sport.”
