U16s compete to be National champions

This Sunday, 23 April the best Under-16 teams in the country will be competing in the U16 National Club Cup Finals at Peffermill. Four boys’ teams and four girls’ teams will play in semi-finals, with the winners reaching the finals later that day. It promises to be an action-packed day!

Match Schedule

In the boys’ semi-finals at 10.30am, last season’s runners-up, Grove Menzieshill take on Kelburne. And Inverleith, who finished third last year, play Western Wildcats.

The winners will compete in the final at 1.45pm, with the two losing teams playing off for 3rd place.

Meanwhile, the girls’ semi-finals at 12pm both promise to be close matches. Watsonians meet Grange in a repeat of last season’s final, with the Raeburn Place girls looking to retain the title. In the other semi, Inverleith and GHK will battle it out in an East v West encounter.

The girls’ final and 3rd/4th play-offs will be at 3.30pm.

Road to the Final

All teams have qualified from their groups during the season, with matches starting last October.

There were three Pools in the boys’ competition, with Kelburne edging out ESM and Edinburgh HC on goal difference after all three teams finished level on points in Pool A. Kelburne’s 9-1 win against Edinburgh HC was the decisive result in a ‘topsy-turvy’ group.

In Pool B, Grove Menzieshill and Watsonians were level on points going into the last game, where the Dundonians sealed their place in the finals with a 3-1 win at Dawson Park. Both teams had earlier beaten Clydesdale and Hillhead in a very competitive group.

Inverleith had three comfortable wins to top Pool C. However, Western Wildcats also qualified for the finals as the best runners-up across the three groups after a 6-1 win against Dundee Wanderers in the last match.

It was more clear-cut in the girls’ competition, where the four Pool winners all had 100% records.

In Pool A, Grange’s 6-1 win against Kelburne in their last match saw them finish 3 points ahead of the Paisley girls. And in Group B, Watsonians scored 29 goals in their wins over Gullane, Hillhead and Western Wildcats to finish top.

In Pool C, GHK had a tight 2-0 win v Fjordhus Reivers before hitting nine goals in both of their other matches against Edinburgh HC and Granite City to win the group. Finally, Inverleith had to dig deep to beat Clydesdale Western 3-2 in the match that decided Pool D, ahead of Perthshire and Grove Menzieshill.

Spectators

Spectators are very welcome to attend the finals – admission is free. There will be teas and coffees on sale at the bar. The event won’t be live-streamed.

There is also a large rugby tournament at Peffermill that day so the car park will be very busy. Participants are encouraged to use public transport or the overflow car park at Kings Buildings. Please show respect for residents if parking in streets.

Best of luck to all teams in their matches. Enjoy your day.
