U12s have fun in the sun
Our Summer Festival season got off to a great start yesterday, with the Under 12’s Mixed event. 150 young players and a big crowd of supporters enjoyed fun in the Glasgow sunshine!
Glasgow Academy’s excellent Upper Windyedge pitch was the venue for this tournament, with 15 teams from 11 clubs involved. They followed Scottish Hockey’s ‘Super Sixes’ format, which is now used for all matches in this age group.
These national Festivals give young players a chance to play against different teams from around the country. Clubs are encouraged to select mixed ability teams, as there are no ‘winners’ or medals. They are a popular addition to the comprehensive schedule of local youth events run by our Clubs and Districts.
George Thornton, Youth Competitions & Events Manager, commented, “There was a great atmosphere, with everyone delighted to be back playing in this event after a two-year absence. Thank you to all those who helped make it such a fun day; the coaches, umpires and parents all worked together to ensure that the young players enjoyed their hockey without focusing on results.”
As well as some of the larger clubs, there were teams from Falkirk & Linlithgow, Gullane, Kelso, Trossachs Tigers and St Andrews University, endorsing the great work being done by all those running their strong youth coaching programmes. Thank you to Gullane, Hillhead, and Watsonians for combining to create a 16th team, the ‘Gullheadians’, to have four groups of four teams.

At the end, Rachel Strachan, Scotland U21 internationalist, handed everyone a ‘Hamish the Hippo’ keyring to send them home with a smile on their faces.
Unfortunately, five teams from the Midlands called off in the week leading up to the Festival, but we hope they can come along next season.
Coming Soon
Next up, we have the Under 14 Mixed Festival on Sunday 8 May at Strathallan School. 18 teams are looking forward to this popular event. The final national Festivals will be the Under 16 Girls and U16 Boys’ events on 28 and 29 May respectively.
