Top two meet at Peffermill

The outstanding fixture in this weekend’s Subway National League
is the meeting of Grange and Glynhill Hotel Kelburne at Peffermill
on Saturday morning. This will be the first meeting of the season
of the top two teams and sees pressure on the home side to try and
close the existing five point gap.

Kelburne are looking for an eighth successive title and to date
have been ruthless in this pursuit. The champions carry goal
scoring threats throughout the team with strikers Jonny Christie
and Alan Forsyth along with set piece expert player/coach Mark
Ralph very much on goalscoring form.

However Manager Harry Coles pointed out “This game will be
crucial to the title aspirations of both clubs.” Kelburne have
always anticipated that the main challenge would come from Grange
and “It looks like they have hit top form” added Coles.

Grange captain Rob Barr view is that “Playing against Kelburne
offers us the toughest test in our domestic season and as always we
know we have to be at our best to compete. It’s a challenge we
relish.” The Edinburgh side will rely on the same squad that has
played over the last month.

Grange like all other teams will be the underdogs and Barr
continued ” Mark Ralph and Willie Marshall provide a solid base
from which the rest of the team can attack in numbers so we will
all have to turn up to get anything out of the game.” The recent
return to first team action of Josh Cairns further strengthens that
base.
The Grange skipper finished by saying “They carry such strong
attacking threat that it is almost inevitable they will score goals
so there is no point in sitting back trying to defend and sneak a
win.”
(Peffermill – 11.30)

Western Wildcats visit AMN Hillhead looking to avenge last
season’s defeat suffered at the hands of Keith Joss’s team. The
Auchenhowie coach Vishal Marwaha commented “Hillhead are a well
coached team. I think they have had good performances but have
failed to covert them into wins.”

Wildcats knew that early season would be difficult especially
integrating some young players and making changes to systems and
tactics. The recent signs are that things are starting to come
together. Marwaha went on to say “There is a great spirit, work
ethic and togetherness. I am trying to use Joe Simpson in various
positions as he is a dynamic player who I feel we can get more
from.”

Hillhead on the other hand will be looking “to convert the good
performances into wins” Marwaha referred to as they look to move
out of the relegation zone.
Long term injury victim Andrew Sewnauth is the only player
unavailable for the Wildcats.
(Jordanhill School – 14.25)

Edinburgh University entertain an Inverleith side who will be
desperate to get their campaign back on track after a disappointing
last fortnight which has seen them without the services of
International defender Adam McKenzie after such a good start to the
season. Coach Stevie McCurry will be looking for a positive
response from his players but they face a competitive University
side displaying a consistency which has taken them to fifth spot in
the league table.
(Peffermill – 14.45)

It is derby day on Tayside where VWS Dundee Wanderers face old
rivals Grove Menzieshill.  Wanderers continue to struggle at
the bottom of the league while the visitors have shown in recent
weeks signs of the form that saw them finish in third place last
term. Menzieshill confidence will also have been raised by the
comeback last weekend to secure the points against Greaves
Clydesdale. However the opposite applies to Wanderers where spirits
must be low as they search for a formula to turn round their
fortunes as the spectre of relegation becomes an ever increasing
concern.
(Riverside Park – 13.30)

Finally inconsistent Greaves Clydesdale await the visit of CALA
Edinburgh. Coach Gordon Shepherd was at a loss to explain the
surrender of a two goal lead on Tayside last week and will be
stressing the need to remain disciplined in their approach
throughout an entire game. CALA have quietly gone about their
business gathering the necessary points which sees them occupy a
comfortable mid table league position which will have pleased coach
Neil Allan following their promotion.
(Titwood – 14.30)

The Women’s Subway National League resumes after a two week break
following Scotland’s U21 trip to Lillieshall and last weekend’s
Inter District tournament.

Glynhill Hotel Kelburne have proved themselves to be a stubborn
difficult team to beat with four draws in six outings the proof.
Saturday sees them entertain a young Milne Craig Western team who
after a shaky start to the season have started to play well with
their current second place in the table probably deserved on
balance.

Coach Neil Menzies reflected “Last season we failed to deal well
with Kelburne’s defensive system and dropped vital points.”
Inconsistency can be a factor with all young relatively
inexperienced sides and Menzies went on to say “The key will be to
be prepared to maintain our discipline and hold to our planned
style of play. Frustration and impatience can be the enemy.”
(Bellahouston – 13.30)

There is an interesting clash between VWS Dundee Wanderers and
an Edinburgh University side appearing revitalised under the
leadership of new player/coach Sam Judge. Wanderers last outing saw
them share the points with reigning champions Grove Menzieshill and
this result could be heavily influenced by the performances of
fellow internationalists Judge and Olympic hopeful Vikki
Bunce.
(Riverside Park – 15.00)

In the other fixtures Giffnock should prove too strong for a
CALA Edinburgh sitting in the bottom half of the league (Meggatland
– 14.00) and it is a similar situation for Western Wildcats who
face the difficult prospect of having to halt the Grove Menzieshill
goal machine, which has already rattled in thirty four goals on
their travels, if they are to take anything from the
game.

Finally the bottom two clubs GHK Ladies and Grange EL clash in a
game vital to both sides as the outcome could have a major bearing
for the rest of the season.
