Title race over?
SUBWAY NATIONAL LEAGUE (WOMEN)
Grove Menzieshill may still be only a single point ahead
of Milne Craig Western at the top of the Subway national league,
but the feeling out there is that the title race is effectively
over and the Taysiders will pick up their sixth consecutive
championship in the next couple of weeks.
But Ailsa Wyllie, Grove`s captain, sagely remarked: “The
championship is not won until the league is concluded. Until
then, every game has to be approached with the right mindset, and
to let your guard down would wrong for us to do as players and as a
team.”
This weekend Wildcats are the visitors to Tayside, but it would
be a major upset if the champions-elect did not win comfortably,
especially as Wyllie`s charges won the earlier fixture 4-0, Louise
Campbell (2), Leigh Fawcett and Linda Clement getting the
goals.
Western need to keep on winning to maintain the pressure, but
coach Neil Menzies is certainly not hopeful of an upset down Dundee
way. Menzies is nonetheless delighted with the performance of
his Titwood youngsters, after an indifferent start his charges have
responded with a run of 13 straight wins, that must be encouraging
for the future at Western. And second spot will be enough to
guarantee European competition next season for Menzies`
youngsters. Glynhill Kelburne are the callers at
Titwood on Saturday, a Holly Cram hat-trick knocked the stuffing
out of them at the last meeting of the sides. (Titwood at

Third placed Giffnock are still smarting from their surprise
Scottish Cup exit at the hands of CALA Edinburgh last Sunday, and
the two sides meet again in Glasgow. A repeat of the earlier
2-0 win in the league would suit Giffnock`s player/coach Rhona
Simpson. (Hutchesons` Grammar School at 14.00)
The relegation issue is focusing the minds of three sides, GHK
have five points and have failed to win since the opening game of
the season, Grange are a point better off but have lost their last
four matches, while Wildcats have nine points but with a game more
played. The head to head between Grange and GHK could
clarify the issue, especially if the Edinburgh side
triumph. Last time out the sides were locked in a 3-3
draw, perhaps the result that neither side is looking for.

The final fixture is between Edinburgh University and VWS Dundee
Wanderers with fourth place in the table the ultimate prize for the
winner. (Peffermill at 15.00)
