Three Scottish developing umpires selected for European development programme
Scottish Hockey is celebrating the success of three developing umpires who have been selected for the Umpires for Europe Programme (U4E), providing an exciting opportunity to develop their skills and gain valuable experience on the European stage.
Sam Cowan, Ben Burton and Emma Reid have been accepted onto the one-year programme, which supports the development of umpires and can act as a stepping stone towards the EuroHockey Umpire Development Programme (UDP).
Their selection is an encouraging milestone for Scottish officiating, highlighting the talent emerging through the domestic umpiring pathway and the opportunities available to officials looking to progress in the sport.
The U4E programme combines practical and theoretical learning across two weekends, delivered alongside EuroHockey tournaments. Participants will also be paired with a mentor, usually a retired senior international umpire, who will provide guidance and support as they continue to develop their officiating.
The combination of tournament experience, structured learning and mentorship offers Sam, Ben and Emma a valuable opportunity to strengthen their technical knowledge, build confidence and learn from experienced officials operating at the highest levels of the game.
Their achievement also reflects the potential of development programmes to help Scottish umpires progress towards international opportunities.
Sarah Wilson, who recently earned the prestigious FIH Umpire of the Year award for a third time, was an early participant in the EuroHockey Umpire Development Programme. Her success provides an inspiring example of what can be achieved through commitment, experience and continued development.
With U4E offering a potential route towards the UDP, Sam, Ben and Emma now have an opportunity to build the foundations for their own future progression in European hockey.
Scottish Hockey congratulates all three umpires on their selection and wishes them every success as they begin this exciting next chapter in their officiating journeys.
