The business end of the Premierships has provided some interesting results

Watsonians seemed to be in full control of their women`s Premiership title a couple of weeks ago but this weekend`s 4-2 reversal at the hands of Edinburgh University has put that in some jeopardy.

The result means that the Edinburgh students are now three points ahead of their rivals at the top of the tree, but Watsonians have a game in hand against Glasgow University on Tuesday, which if they win will bring them back level with one game to go. But crucially Watsonians have a five goal advantage over Sam Judge`s charges.

Edinburgh moved quickly into a two goal lead through Harriet Pratt and Louise Campbell but Ellie Stott pulled one back for the champions. The students regained their two goal lead through Sophie Hinds by the interval.

A comeback seemed on the cards when Susan Hamilton scored at a penalty corner to make it 3-2 but Edinburgh`s victory was sealed with a penalty corner rebound from Katie Robertson for a 4-2 scoreline. The champions pressed to get back into the contest in the final quarter, but it was not to be.

Wildcats confirmed their third spot with a 3-1 win over Glasgow University. Rachel Bain and Emma McDiarmid put the Cats two up before Catriona Humphrey pulled one back for the students before the interval. Glasgow threw a bit of caution to the wind to get back on level terms but were caught on the hop when Olivia Finch got a third for the Cats.

Clydesdale Western have put themselves in a good position for that last semi-final spot after a 2-0 win over rivals GHK at Titwood – the sides are level on 25 points but Clydesdale have a much superior goal difference. Fran Lonergan put Clydesdale a goal up with a direct strike at their first penalty corners and Anna Winter followed up with a rebound strike at another set piece to double the tally – and there were no further goals in the second half.

In the lower reaches Gordonians finally sealed their survival with a 3-2 win over visiting Inverleith. There was a double for Jess Freeland while Heather Howie got the other. Inverleith`s replies came from Elise Miller and Jennifer Veitch. The result leaves Inverleith firmly planted in the relegation play-off spot.

But Inverleith will how have to look below them as Dundee Wanderers recorded their first win of the season with a 2-1 win over Uddingston on Tayside. All the goals came in the first half with Ruth Cox at a penalty corner rebound and Jess Martin with a solo effort scoring for the Taysiders while D`Arcey Campbell was on target for Uddingston. The Dundonians are now only two points behind Inverleith who they play next weekend – the automatic relegation spot is for the loser.

Hillhead confirmed their top spot in the lower six competition with a 3-1 win at Grange whose scorer was Kathryn Meenan.

Western Wildcats stumbled at the penultimate stage of the Premiership campaign after being held to a 1-1 draw by rivals Grange at Auchenhowie. The result is that Edinburgh side retained their single point lead at the top and now only need to beat Watsonians next weekend to open the champagne.

Grange manager Martin Shepherdson said: “We are very pleased with the result and now the title is in our own hands. It was a tough game for us as Wildcats had most of the play but we defended very well and were delighted with the draw.”

It looked ominous for Grange when Wildcats` top striker Andrew McConnell opened the scoring from a penalty corner in only three minutes. Although Wildcats continued to dominate, spurning several chances, Grange stuck to their task and in the third quarter a perfect pass from Joe Waterston allowed Rory McCann to equalise at the far post, and that is how it stood at full time.

Western`s coach Vishal Marwaha said: “I felt we dominated most of the game with several chances from open play and penalty corners but we couldn`t score again, we tried to get the winner in the fourth quarter but it didn`t fall to us.”

Edinburgh University were in fine scoring form with a 9-1 win over Inverleith, the highlight was a hat-trick for Alex Wilson and there were two each for Keir Robb and Iain McFadden, Robbie Croll and Hamish Imrie getting the others – Ollie Wilson got Inverleith`s consolation.

Clydesdale are in the driving seat in the quest for that illusive last semi-final spot after drawing 1-1 at Watsonians, the result leaves both sides on the same points but the former have a better goal difference. Jamie Green was on target for the Titwood-based side while Watsonians` goal came from a penalty corner strike by Dan Coultas.

In the lower reaches ESM continued their fairly tail end to the season with a 4-3 win at Dunfermline Carnegie and confirmed their Premiership status for next season. There were two goals for Dave Ellis with Jamie Hogarth and James Kelly getting the others for the Edinburgh side while a double from Andrew Doyle and one by Magnus Ferrier replied for the Fifers who are now firmly in the relegation play-off spot.

FMGM Monarchs are rooted in bottom spot after going down 3-2 to Kelburne whose scorers were Jay Berry, Scott Peters and Scott Love, with Mark Stevenson and Ross Glashan getting the Taysiders strikes.

Hillhead held on to seventh spot after a 2-2 draw with Uddingston. Finn Halliday opened for the Lanarkshire side at a penalty corner but Matt Carder replied with a cracking reverse stick shot to level. Andrew Sinclair then put Uddingston 2-1 up only for Halliday to level from the spot.
