Testing weekend for CALA Edinburgh
CALA Edinburgh, sitting proudly in second place, will undergo a
stern examination of the progress made this season in the Aberdeen
Asset Management Women’s League when they face a double header
against Grove Menzieshill and Milne Craig Clydesdale Western this
weekend.
CALA travel to Dundee for a top of a table clash with
Grove(14.30) on Saturday and then on Sunday host
Western(14.00.) Grove have enjoyed an unbeaten run in the
league to date with narrow one goal wins Western, Edinburgh
University and Dundee Wanderers so therefore a win over CALA would
see them open up a commanding lead which would be extremely
difficult to overturn.
The Meggatland team’s only defeat this season was on Tayside
where they suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat to Wanderers and also they
do not enjoy a good record against their hosts in recent seasons.
Unfortunately for CALA, the same can be said of their meetings with
Western giving a clear indication of the size of the task facing
them over the weekend.
Sam Judge takes her Edinburgh University team to Glasgow to face
Giffnock(14.00) and the following day return home to entertain an
Inverleith team(15.00) still looking to open their account. The
player/coach was pleased with her team’s performance against
Western last weekend and was “disappointed not to take our chances
and win the game.”
Judge went on to say “I’m expecting a tough, physical game
against Giffnock. They have had some mixed results so far but seem
to be getting better as the weeks go on.”
The students sit in third place at the moment but have not beaten
the Glasgow team in any of their last four meetings which backs up
Judge’s earlier assumption.
Meetings between Western and Dundee Wanderers have recently
become very tight competitive encounters and Saturday should be no
different at Titwood(16.00.) Coach Neil Menzies is wary of
the goal threat carried by Wanderers saying “We know they will play
to the final whistle and as long as they remain within touching
distance, they will be capable of a result.”
The coach, looking ahead to the game with CALA on Sunday(14.00)
feels “So far they have had a relatively easy run in the league and
now face a run of fixtures against the top teams. As a consequence
it is hard to assess their level this year.” Western have been
working hard in training on their finishing but Menzies feels “We
need to keep a balanced approach and I do believe we have the
people capable of scoring many more than they are at present. We
must also improve on our PC efficiency.)
Western will be without influential captain Catriona Ralph, as a
decision has been taken that a break from hockey, until January, is
needed to give time to recover from a niggling ongoing back
problem.
Saturday’s programme is completed with the game between
Inverleith and Grange(14.00) at Mary Erskine School and Western
Wildcats versus Kelburne (12.30) at Auchenhowie.
The other games scheduled for Sunday see Dundee Wanderers face
the challenge of Giffnock at Dalnacraig(13.00) then Grange against
Wildcats at Peffermill(13.30.) The final game is at
Bellahouston(13.30) where Grove will be looking to tighten their
grip on the league title when they take on a Kelburne team showing
recent signs of recovering from a difficult start to the
season.
