Testing time for Wanderers
VWS Dundee Wanderers lead the Subway indoor national
league by the slender margin of a single goal from city rivals
Grove Menzieshill, the situation will undoubtedly become clearer
when the champions meet both Grove and other title rivals Milne
Craig Western in a crucial double header at Forthbank Sports
Centre in Stirling.
Earlier in the day Wanderers can get themselves psyched up with
an opening fixture against Grove`s second string who currently at
the foot of the table.
So far it has been plain sailing for a Wanderers side in search
of a hat-trick of titles, but it is the results against Grove and
Western that will determine the destiny of this year`s
championship.
“This weekend we have three games and we`re confident that we
can take full points from each of these games,” said Carmin Dow,
Wanderers` international goalkeeper. “The girls are under no
illusions, it will be a hard shift, but there`s no doubt in our
minds that if we put the work in we are more that capable of taking
the lead at the top of the table after this weekend.”
Dow maintained that the experience in the squad was a key
strength for Wanderers, but the absence of playmaker Vikki Bunce,
at present with Great Britain in San Diego for five test matches
against the USA, is a real loss to the Taysiders`
aspirations. But there have been recruits to the squad, Sam
Sangster is back while Louise Sherriffs and Fiona Plain have been
added to the ranks.
On paper Grove could be the more difficult assignment, they beat
Western 3-1 last weekend with Ali Bell (2) and Linda Clement on
target. Western in the final game will be no pushover either,
coach Neil Menzies will be looking for the three points to maintain
their interest in the title, and the Glasgow side have relatively
easier fixtures against Kelburne and Clydesdale earlier in the day,
and therefore could be fresher.
There is a wealth of international experience in the Grove ranks
– Ailsa Wyllie, Louise Carroll, Linda Clement, Louise Baxter, Ali
Bell and Leigh Fawcett, and the list goes on. At the start of
the season, captain Kat Cameron stated: “Our aim is just to take
one game at a time and have a consistent season.”
However, if Grove can take the three points from Wanderers on
Sunday, Cameron`s charges will have their noses in front in the
title race.
Grove`s other games are against Reid Kerr College Kelburne and
CALA Edinburgh, and six points should be on the cards.
In the bottom half of the league CALA eased their concerns with
victories over Granite City Wanderers (7-1) and Clydesdale (4-0)
last weekend, the Edinburgh side will be hoping to pick up
another three points from Grove A on Sunday. The Aberdonians
also recorded their first win in the top flight against Grove A,
and lifted themselves off the bottom rung. These results
leave both Grove A and Clydesdale as the only sides without a win
and early favourites for the relegation dogfight.
