Super Series is back!
Following the great success of Super Series 2018 the competition will return in 2019 at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre. This year there will also be a men’s competition in the best-v-best tournament with Dundee Devils; Edinburgh Lightning; and Glasgow Thunder all taking to the pitch in men’s and women’s matches.
The event will be held in Glasgow on Friday 29 November; Saturday 30 November; and Sunday 1 December. Edinburgh Lightning were the victors last year in the women’s competition and will be out to defend their title in 2019.
The teams are based roughly on geographical allegiances with flexibility built in to ensure the best players are playing. The players are all nominated by club coaches and a selection panel and the squads will be announced on Thursday 31 October.
The series has been designed to bridge the gap between club and international hockey with Scotland’s best hockey players featuring in three teams of 18 in this exciting competition.
Three new players were added to the Scotland women’s squad following last year’s inaugural tournament: Louise Campbell; McKenzie Bell; and Jess Buchanan.
A Scottish Hockey Development Series for women will also be played as part of the event before each of the Super Series matches. Emerging talent from across Scotland will compete in a contest mirroring the Super Series matches.
In last year’s Women’s Development Series, it was Glasgow Thunder who took the title and now face the challenge to retain the championship this time out.
There will also be an Academy Series one week ahead of Super Series featuring Scotland’s most talented young hockey players.
Scottish Hockey’s Head of Performance Andy Tennant said, “I’m really looking forward to Super Series. We’ve got a men’s Super Series for the first time as well as the Women’s Super Series and Development Series, so it will be a great weekend of best-v-best hockey. Super Series is a great opportunity for players; last year there were players who earned a place in national squads so it’s a weekend that provides strong opportunities for players to prove they’re good enough to play international hockey.
“It bridges the gap between club level and international and gives us that level of competition where we can have a close look at athletes, and see if they’re potentially ready to play international hockey.
“For selection we’ve got a selection panel of people who are involved in the international selections but are also involved in club hockey, so we’ll be looking at the best players from club hockey and going out to club coaches to look for recommendations as well.”
Entry to the Super Series is free.
