Summer Festivals inspire stars of the future

Scottish Hockey’s Summer Festivals are now in full swing. This weekend it’s the turn of the Under 14s, following an entertaining Under 12s Festival on 14 May.

These events provide young players with the opportunity to play for their club in a fun tournament against teams from around the country without the ‘pressure’ of winning medals. National and Brave Academy players are precluded from playing to give others a chance to shine.

U12 Mixed Festival

The U12 Mixed Festival returned to the Glasgow National Hockey Centre this year. Our future stars enjoyed playing on the pitch which has hosted Commonwealth Games, European Championships and Domestic Cup Finals.

The 20 teams were split into four groups of five teams, followed by play-offs and finals across two tournaments, using ‘Super Sixes’ rules. Teams travelled from as far afield as Aberdeen, Dundee, Falkirk and Kelso to enjoy the action – and they rose to the occasion!

In the Group A/B competition, Grange Tigers scored two late goals to beat Watsonians Sharks 4-3 in a thrilling final. The other two Watsonians’ teams met in the Group C/D event, with the Dolphins beating the Stingrays 5-1. Hillhead and Western Wildcats won the 3rd-place play-offs. And a shout-out to Trossachs Tigers for only losing 1-0 to a talented Clydesdale Western team.

Every team scored goals; and most importantly, everyone had fun!  Granite City won the ‘best-named teams’ award – Pebbles and Chukkies.  And the café did a roaring trade in coffees and cakes!

Thank you to volunteers Elisabeth and Rachel Meredith, who managed the scoreboard so efficiently across the 50 matches.

U14 Mixed Festival

On Sunday 28 May it’s the turn of the U14s to play their Festival at Strathallan School, Perth & Kinross. 16 teams from 11 clubs will enjoy playing different teams that they don’t usually play during the season.

The teams competing are Dundee Wanderers, Falkirk & Linlithgow, Grange, Granite City Wanderers, Hillhead, Kelburne, Kelso, Perthshire, Trossachs Tigers, Watsonians and Western Wildcats. Good luck to all teams.

U16 Festivals

Over the next couple of weekends, the U16s will play 11-a-side matches at their Festivals.

Eleven teams will travel to Glenalmond on Saturday 3 June for the U16 Girls Festival. And the club Festival season finishes with the U16 Boys’ tournament at Strathallan on Sunday 11 June.

We hope that everyone enjoys their matches and the sun shines!
