Stepps Hockey Club celebrates centenary
“The very first minutes, written in pencil and still legible on a writing pad, aptly named “Challenge”, states that at a meeting held in the Union Public Hall on 15th April 1913 “it was decided to form a hockey club in Stepps”.”
100 years on, Stepps HC is taking time out of pre-season preparations to host what will be the largest event in the club’s history. A day of celebration is planned at the club’s current playing base at the AstroTurf pitch at Millerston – just along the road from Stepps.
All current members of the club (as well as a number of former players and invited guests) will be involved in matches during the day. The on-pitch festivities will conclude with a match between the Stepps 1st XI and a Scotland XI.
Whilst the men’s first team have been regulars in National League Division 2, the work carried out in the background of the club has been significant in recent years. Two years ago, the club established a 3rd team for youth development which plays in the West District leagues.
Last season, the 3rd team won their league and the 2nd team won the Regional League Division 2. Last season, the club also fielded a ladies team for the first time in many years. The club is growing and growing.
The youth section has also expanded, with Stepps well represented again in District sides and beyond at youth level. All this work is helping to make Stepps Hockey Club an integral part of local community life and will help to secure the future of the club.
The games on Saturday will likely see one of the largest crowds of recent seasons and anyone with an interest in Stepps Hockey Club, or just hockey in general, are welcome along to Millerston to witness the quality of hockey – as well as food and drink facilities – that we will have on offer.
The day will conclude with a spectacular dinner at the Grand Central Hotel in Glasgow. With over 230 guests, it promises to be a great night with some fantastic speakers, great food and perhaps one or two drinks as well.
The list of thank you’s for the day are far too long to go into, but special mention must be paid to Argyle Consulting Ltd who are helping to sponsor the event and the University of Strathclyde for their continued support. This is not going to be an ordinary day in Stepps long history and as well as celebrating the past, it will put the club on a great footing looking ahead to many more successful years.
