Spain next up in Den Bosch
VOLVO EUROPEAN JUNIOR NATIONS CHAMPIONSHIPS (MEN) – DEN
BOSCH (NED) – 26 AUGUST to 01 SEPTEMBER 2012
Neil Allan, Scotland under 21`s manager, is playing down
the significance of today`s second pool match against Spain in the
European Junior Nations Championships in Den Bosch.
“The Spain game is no more important to us following the result
against Germany, this has not changed what we are aiming
for. We have a set of aims and targets as a squad, and
they are to stay in the European A Division and to qualify for the
Junior World Cup,” said Allan.
Allan is correct in that the defeat by Germany on Sunday was
predictable, but today`s clash with Spain had taken on an extra
dimension following the latter`s 4-0 defeat by Belgium on the
opening day. Even at this early stage in pool
competition, Germany and Belgium have emerged as favourites for the
top two spots, while Scotland and Spain could well contest the
relegation pool. That being the case, the winner
of today`s encounter will take a giant leap towards these illusive
fifth and sixth final positions, and fulfil Allan`s targets.
In a warm-up series against the Spanish in Barcelona last month,
the Scots went down 7-2, 4-0 and 5-0, but Allan is more confident
about the outcome of today`s clash.
“While we lost the series in Barcelona, we learned a lot about
Spain and their style of play. If the boys play
well and stick to the game plan laid out by coach Graham Moodie,
then we can be sure of giving Spain a very good game.
“I think the game will be tight and it would be good for the
boys to get three points on the board before facing the Belgians in
the final pool match on Wednesday.”
In the other pool England and hosts Netherlands share top spot
after wins against Wales and France respectively.
