Six goal thriller at Auchenhowie
PRESIDENTS CUP
The contest for pole position in pool A of the
Presidents Cup between Western Wildcats and Grove Menzieshill at
Auchenhowie had everything, the teams shared six goals, the
Taysiders notched a dramatic equaliser in the final seconds, there
were five yellow cards, and both coaches were left very unhappy
about the umpires.
Menzieshill shocked the Wildcats by taking the lead at their
first penalty corner after a poor tackle by Joe Simpson, Gavin
Tomlinson`s shot deceived the goalkeeper after coming off a
defender. The lead lasted barely a minute, it was
Wildcats` turn to be awarded a set piece and Scott McCartney drove
his shot low into the net for the equaliser.
A deliberate foul by Western defender David Mansouri in the
circle resulted in a penalty for Menzieshill and a yellow card for
Mansouri, again Tomlinson did the needful from the spot for a 2-1
half-time lead.
A dangerous sliding challenge by Ross McPherson donated the
Wildcats a set piece and McCartney again sent his drag flick past
the Menzieshill keeper for the equaliser. The Wildcats seemed
to have the three points in the bag when Douglas Simpson had his
reverse stick shot saved by the keeper but Peter Martin followed up
to hit home the resulting bobbling
ball. But the visitors were awarded
another penalty corner in the final minute and Tomlinson sent home
another drag flick to level the scores at 3-3 and pick up his own
hat-trick.
Inverleith march to the top of the pool with a comfortable 4-1
win over newly promoted Watsonians. The foundation of
the victory came with three goals in the first half, Chris Duncan
scored two from penalty corners while Lewis Gibson got the
other. Injuries to Paul Ritchie and Andrew
Sinclair reduced the Inverleith squad after the interval, but
Stevie McCurry`s charges still managed an additional strike from
Phil Hall.
Grange consolidated their position at the top of pool B with a
3-0 victory over AMN Hillhead. The first half was
goalless, but ten minutes after the interval Grange had their noses
in front when Duncan Riddell scored at a breakaway, he rounded the
goalkeeper and fired the ball into the empty net. Soon
after Fraser Sands doubled the score with a low drag flick at a
penalty corner. The clincher came from the spot, Martin
Kelly was fouled in the act of shooting and Rob Barr converted the
resulting penalty.
The other game in this pool resulted in a thrilling 6-6 each
draw between PSL Team Sports Clydesdale and Edinburgh University at
Titwood. The home side seemed in total control, they
reached the interval three goals ahead, courtesy of a hat-trick by
Ciaran Crawford. The second half provided a flood
of goals, Andrew Campbell and Max Brors both scored twice for the
students while Neil McNiven and Robbie Greenhaugh got the others in
Edinburgh`s comeback, and Crawford again, Raymond Wrightson and
Rory McCann replied for the home side.
