Single goal defeat to Irish
SCOTLAND 0 IRELAND

Scotland`s preparations for the FIH Champions Challenge
later this month stuttered when they lost 1-0 to Ireland at
Auchenhowie yesterday. Scotland coach Gordon Shepherd
was looking for his experienced front line to score goals, but they
came up with a blank.
The first half was a relatively even affair with neither
goalkeeper tested, but Scotland had a chance to take the lead when
Leigh Fawcett passed the ball on to Nikki Lloyd whose effort went
wide of the left hand post. Towards the end of the half
the Scots had three penalty corner chances, in the final one Vikki
Bunce squared the ball to Catriona Ralph whose shot found the net,
only to be disallowed after consultation by the umpires.
The Irish came out of the blocks after half time and in six
minutes had their noses in front, Amy Gibson saved the first strike
but the second effort found the net off the post. The
Scots retaliated, Sarah Robertson set up Sam Judge but she miss-hit
her shot, and the same player had her next effort blocked out by
defenders after good work from Bunce and Ailsa
Wyllie.
The Scots pressed for the equaliser in the closing minutes,
Kareena Marshall drove the ball into the circle but Lloyd`s deft
flick went wide and in the final minute a reverse stick shot by
Bunce was saved by the Irish goalkeeper.
In Germany, Scotland`s senior men`s squad lost 6-1 to Bundesliga
side Club an der Alster 6-1 in a rather poor performance. It
was a baptism of fire for Inverleith keeper Dave Forrester, but he
was not at fault with the goals and in fact made several good saves
over the piece.
The Scots were two down at the interval and then went four
behind after 53 minutes. Speculative chances fell to
Fergus Dunn and Kenny Bain, but it was the Germans who found the
target again for the 5-0 lead. With five minutes left, a one
to one on the German goalkeeper left Dunn to pass the ball on to
Bain for a simple tap in for Scotland`s only goal.
However, the Germans stepped it up again in the final minute and
increased the score to 6-1.
