Simpson snatches late brilliant winner.
Giffnock snatched a late winner courtesy
of a brilliant individual effort from player/coach Rhona Simpson to
claim all three points in today’s game of the day in the Subway
National League.
Wanderers took a half time lead when a long ball
out of defence found Julie Bryce unmarked at the top of the circle
and she calmly rounded keeper Lauren Grant to send the ball into an
empty net. Gifffnock had reason to feel a little aggrieved as it
was the home side who had created the better opportunities without
being able to hit the target.
The game continued in similar fashion and
Giffnock eventually did find the target when a sweetly timed
straight strike from Louise Fleming found the back of the net.
Giffnock then went in search of a winner and it duly arrived late
in the game when Simpson drove into the circle past several
defenders to lift a full length diving effort over the onrushing
Dow.
Milne Craig Western beat GHK 7-1 at Titwood to
remain in second place. Western built up a three goal advantage by
the interval through a tap in from Holly Cram, a set piece rebound
effort by captain Catriona Ralph and a neat finish by Nicola
Pitticas.
Western’s domination continued almost unabated
and further goals from Ralph and Pitticas completed their
hat-tricks. Western’s Neil Menzies commented after the game “As a
coach you can always find faults in a performance but overall I was
satisfied with the way we went about the game.”
Edinburgh University continue to impress and by
winning 3-0 against Western Wildcats move on to the same points
total as Wanderers albeit six adrift of third placed Giffnock. The
students marksmen were Sarah Robertson, Camilla Lyttle and
player/coach Sam Judge.
The University’s Cup game scheduled for Sunday
has had to be postponed as Giffnock A are unable to raise a
team.
Glynhill Hotel Kelburne pushed champions Grove
Menzieshill all the way in a closely fought encounter at
Bellahouston. The visitors led through a Kat Cameron goal but the
Paisley side shocked Grove by producing an equaliser.
However with only a minute left on the clock Ali
Bell scored from a short corner to snatch all three points for a
much relieved Grove side and leave the hosts devastated.
The last game on the card saw CALA Edinburgh
claim an away win beating the bottom side Grange EL 3-1. Ironically
these sides meet again tomorrow in the Cup.
