Seven-goal success for Western Wildcats in the Men’s Scottish Cup Final
Men’s Scottish Cup Final – ESM 1-7 Western Wildcats
Western Wildcats won the Men’s Scottish Cup with a sensational 7-1 victory over Erskine Stewart’s Melville at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre.
Western opened the scoring early when they piled into the circle at pace and Johnny Christie fired home for 1-0.
Rob Harwood bagged the second. A quick exchange on the right opened the defence up and Harwood was on hand to knock the ball into the empty net. 2-0.
Andy McConnell made it 3-0 with seven minutes on the clock with a pinpoint drag flick into the top left corner of the net.
Harwood bagged his second and Western’s fourth midway through the second quarter after some slick passing in the circle allowed the striker to rattle a low effort against the backboard. 4-0.
Western’s pressure continued into the second half as they pegged ESM back in their own circle.
Callum Duke almost made it five when he thundered the ball off the crossbar, then Fraser Moran had a shot on the turn zip just wide of the right post.
Early in the fourth some excellent play by Harwood on the baseline saw him almost pick out Moran arriving at the far post, but the ball evaded him and ESM survived.
It went to 5-0 when Duke pounced in the D to convert from close range, after a lovely overhead pass found Nikki Homfray on the baseline, who controlled the ball perfectly and picked out Duke.
Some great work down the left by Moran saw him pick out Jack Mackenzie at the far post to convert for 6-0.
The scoring was continued by Cameron Moran after some great build up play that found him sliding in at the far post for 7-0.
Andy McCutcheon rounded off the scoring when the youngster pulled one back for ESM with the last strike of the ball; his low strike from a tight angle made it 7-1.
Men’s Scottish Plate Final – FMGM Monarchs 1-1 (5-4) Gordonians
FMGM Monarchs won the Men’s Scottish Plate 5-4 in a shootout after a tight 1-1 draw at full time.
Gordonians surged forward on a counter attack and Adam Walker had an effort cleared by the last defender to keep the scores level.
A penalty corner strike from the top of the D by Leon Wilkie gave Gordonians the lead midway through the opening quarter. The powerful strike thundered into the bottom left corner for 1-0.
The second quarter was edged by Gordonians although the Monarchs defence was fairly comfortable.
Monarchs started the second half well and were rewarded with the equaliser. Callum Boag found himself in space in the circle and zipped the ball into the top right corner to make it 1-1.
A quick counter almost saw Monarchs take the lead when the Glashan brothers worked the ball into the Gordonians D, but the keeper was out quick to clear the danger.
Then it was Gordonians’ turn to come close when a deflection in front of the goalkeeper saw the ball loop just wide of the target.
Monarchs nearly stole the contest with four minutes to play when Boag’s penalty corner clipped the crossbar.
The match looked destined for penalties, and so it would be. The shootout was as tight as the match and eventually it ended up 5-4 to Monarchs to lift the trophy at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre.
Men’s Reserve Cup Final – Grange 4s 1-3 Watsonians 3s
The Men’s Reserve Cup was lifted by Watsonians 3s after a 3-1 victory over Grange 4s.
It was a cagey opening to the contest with neither side grasping control of the match. Grange 4s had a penalty corner opportunity but couldn’t convert, and the opening quarter ended goalless.
In the second quarter Watsonians 3s created the first real opportunity when they piled in on goal, and it led to a corner. The corner routine allowed Rory Saunders to fire the ball low into the net for 1-0.
Then came a moment of magic from Harry Yarr, he took the ball from the right wing, surged into the circle and smashed the ball into the bottom left corner for 2-0.
Early in the second half Grange 4s had back-to-back penalty corners but the Watsonians 3s defence held firm.
The pressure was telling and Grant Martin hit the post for Grange as they set about pulling a goal back.
Watsonians 3s went 3-0 up through a penalty corner routine that saw Saunders bag his second of the match on the reverse.
Grange had a great opportunity from the penalty spot in the final quarter to pull one back, but an excellent save low to the right by Ross Millar denied the goal.
Another flick was awarded to Grange 4s shortly after and this time the ball found the net through Todd Mills for 3-1.
Men’s District Cup – Western Wildcats 2s 2-4 Hillhead 2s
It was victory for Hillhead 2s in the Men’s District Cup Final after a 4-2 win over Western Wildcats 2s.
Hillhead 2s scored an early goal, and it was a goal of beauty. Chris Moon sprayed a lovely pass into the circle, which took three Wildcats defenders out the game, and Ewan Campbell applied the finish for 1-0.
The second came a short time later, and it was a double for Campbell. A penalty corner exchange gave Campbell the chance to finish low from close range. 2-0.
A Western Wildcats 2s onslaught late in the opening quarter was well defended and Hillhead retained a two goal lead at the first break.
Moon continued to cause Wildcats problems in the second quarter with a superb array of passing, but there were no further opportunities for goals.
The second half saw Hillhead 2s go 3-0 up. The Campbell brothers combined down the left and Graeme Campbell applied a low finish across goal into the bottom right corner.
Matt Wilson added his name to the score sheet for Hillhead 2s when he popped up at the right post at a penalty corner routine to make it 4-0.
Western Wildcats 2s then pulled one back through a composed finish by Luke Bannerman to make it 4-1.
In the final quarter Wildcats pulled it back to 4-2 through a good finish into the far corner by Kyle Bannerman.
Men’s Reserve Plate Final – Watsonians 4s 1-5 Clydesdale 3s
Clydesdale 3s were crowned men’s Reserve Plate champions with a 5-1 victory over Watsonians 4s at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre.
As the game got underway Gareth Clunie for Clydesdale had a powerful shot on the turn blocked by the keeper’s leg guards.
It was the Edinburgh side that took the lead early doors and it was Christopher Robson who supplied the strike with a deflection at the far post. 1-0.
Then Clydesdale equalised through Mitch Pritchard a minute later for 1-1.
Graeme Dunlop found the net with a rebound at a penalty corner for 2-1 to Clydesdale.
Colin Gambles furthered Clydesdale’s advantage when he struck in the 25th minute for 3-1.
Clydesdale struck again in the 56th minute through Guy Hogan for 4-1 and Dunlop rounded off the scoring late on for his second, and Clydesdale 3s fifth to lift the trophy in Glasgow.
Men’s District Plate Final – Kelburne 2s 8-2 Dumfries
Kelburne 2s were on top form as they won 8-2 against Dumfries in the Men’s District Cup Final.
The game was ten minutes old when Kelburne took the lead and the goal came courtesy of an Adam Bain penalty corner strike. 1-0.
A few minutes later and Dumfries found an equaliser. Todd Roach struck from open play to make it 1-1.
Fergus Duncan put Kelburne back in front in the second quarter but Dumfries immediately struck back through Iain Callandar for 2-2.
The Kelburne took control. They went 3-2 ahead through Scott Love before a double from Martin Byrne gave them a 5-2 advantage.
A penalty stroke for Alan Walker made it 6-2 before a penalty corner by Tom Hunt made it 7-2.
The final goal of the game from the penalty spot made it 8-2 and gave Kelburne 2s a great Men’s District Plate victory in Glasgow.
