Semi-final on hold for GB women
GREAT BRITAIN 1 CHINA 2 (WOMEN)
OLYMPICS
Scots duo Laura Bartlett and Emily Maguire now have a
frustrating wait to see if they will be medal winners after Great
Britain lost 2-1 to China in a crucial pool match at the Riverside
Arena yesterday.
Team GB only needed a draw to secure a semi-final place, but
froze against the stuffy Chinese and now have to beat the
Netherlands in their final group match to advance.
However, Danny Kerry`s charges are still two points ahead of
China, they play Japan in their final pool match, but the
Netherlands have already qualified for the semi-finals, so have
little to play for but pride.
Team GB had an insipid first half against the Chinese, they
created few chances until the end of the first half when Kate Walsh
and Crista Cullen failed to score from four penalty
corners. The Chinese struck early after the interval
with two set piece strikes to take the initiative, while GB`s only
chance fell to Sally Walton whose shot was saved by the
keeper.
Cullen eventually scored from a penalty corner with less than
two minutes remaining, but far too little to late.
