Second victory for Scotland women over Canada in Glasgow

Scotland women defeated Canada 1-0 in the third of four test matches at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre. It follows a 3-1 victory for Scotland and a 1-1 draw in the previous two encounters of the series, with the two due to meet for the final time tomorrow night in Glasgow.

Scotland started the game well with a successful pressing game that kept the ball largely in the Canadian half.

With two minutes of the first quarter remaining some excellent play down the left by Sophie Hinds led to Sarah Jamieson winning the first penalty corner of the match.

It would bring the first goal of the game as Jenny Eadie blasted home low into the bottom left corner to make it 1-0 for Scotland.

Bronwyn Shields was playing some silky hockey in midfield, Anna McWilliams was distributing the ball well, and Mhairi Low looked a threat down the right flank, as Scotland continued to pile on pressure in the second quarter.

A great interception by Heather McEwan led to a chance for Katie Swanson to strike from the top of the circle, but it drifted wide of the left post.

The second half began in a similar fashion to the first with Scotland pressing well and winning the ball high up the pitch. Shields and Jamieson took turns at running at the Canada defence but were unable to burst through.

Early in the final quarter some last gasp defending stopped Jika Nyirenda from picking out Jamieson at the far post for a tap in as the Scots searched for the killer second goal.

Then at the second phase of a penalty corner a low bullet by Eadie was blocked the leg guard of Canada’s keeper.

There would be no further goals but it was a comfortable 1-0 win for Scotland in Glasgow, with the two set to meet for the final time tomorrow evening.

Head Coach Chris Duncan said, “Winning at international level is hard and winning is a habit that we’re looking to get into. We’re really pleased at the fact we feel we still have levels to move into, and for our development this is very positive.

“It was a different type of game today. Canada had a resolute game plan and even though we had lots of the ball we’re frustrated to not create cleaner cut chances. We gave opportunities to some younger players who stepped up and executed what we were looking to do. This shows the depth we’re building not just in the squad, but in the country.

“We’re looking forward to the final game of the series, and we’ll look to finish on a high to complete a positive series.”
