Second spot for Grange
SUBWAY NATIONAL LEAGUE (MEN)
At the start of the season Rob Barr, Grange`s captain,
looked for a top two spot in the Subway national league,
qualification for Europe, and to make up some ground on champions
Glynhill Kelburne. The latter may still have eluded
him, the Paisley won the championship for the eighth consecutive
time with a perfect record, but Barr is very much on course for his
other targets.
With three games remaining, Grange are four and seven points
ahead rivals Inverleith and Western Wildcats respectively, and
these two sides clash on Saturday at the Wildcats` new
water-based pitch at Auchenhowie. Grange, however,
should have another three points under the belt against a CALA
Edinburgh side that are on a five game losing streak and are facing
the relegation play-off spot. When the teams met earlier in
the season, Grange emerged 6-2 winners, both Barr from the penalty
spot and Cammie Fraser scored twice that day. (Meggetland at

Ironically, all three contenders have the same fixtures left
against newly crowned champions Kelburne and AMN Hillhead, although
the Wildcats also have an outstanding game against already
relegated VWS Dundee Wanderers.
Last weekend was pivotal, Grange beat Inverleith 4-0 last
Saturday, the latter went on to draw 3-3 with Grove Menzieshill in
a catch-up encounter the next day. Meanwhile, the
Wildcats also dropped points in a 3-3 draw with Greaves
Clydesdale.
Western Wildcats and Inverleith are head to head at Auchenhowie
on Saturday and both coaches seem of similar mind, a top
three place was always the bottom line target and second spot is
probably beyond them now. As it stands Inverleith
are third, three points ahead of Western, but with a game more
played.
Stevie McCurry, Inverleith`s coach, gives his view on last
weekend`s dropped five points. We competed well
in both games last weekend, but some poor defending let us
down. Also we created some good scoring opportunities,
but failed to take these. If we can improve on these
things, then this will help us towards a more positive outcome
against Western.”
Western have also lost ground with draws in the last three
encounters. “It was disappointing to drop points against
Clydesdale last week, but I think it was a fair result,” said
Vishal Marwaha, the Wildcats` coach.
Western just shaded the first league match with a 3-2 victory,
courtesy of goals from the inevitable duo of Douglas Simpson (2)
and Scott McCartney. The winner on Saturday will
definitely be front runner for that third spot in the table.

It looks rather doom and gloom for CALA in second bottom spot,
they are three points adrift of AMN Hillhead, and the latter have a
game in hand. While CALA are unlikely to get any change
against Grange this weekend, they have possibilities in the final
two fixtures against Edinburgh Universith and Clydesdale. In
contrast, Hillhead have an awkward game against Menziehill on
Tayside this week, then Inverleith and Western to
finish. (Dawson Park at 12.30)
In the final game this weekend Clydesdale, who put up a plucky
performance against Western last Saturday, should collect another
three points against a Dundee Wanderers side already
doomed to the second division next season. (Riverside Park at
