Scottish youngsters narrowly lose out to England
Scotland U18 and U16 Girls were in action in the Four Nations Tournament at Lillieshall today, with both sides losing by narrow margins against England.
Jessica Ross and Jenny Eadie were on the score-sheet for Scotland U18 Girls as they were edged out 3-2 by their English counterparts in an excellent game that could have been won by either side.
Following the match, Scotland U18 Head Coach Colin Clarke said, “We’re pleased with the team performance given that this is their first competitive game as a squad and the girls fought all the way to the end. The result could have gone either way and we will take a lot of positives from this match into the game against Germany tomorrow.”
The Scots took the lead in the third minute when an excellent move and link-up play led to Jessica Ross firing the ball past the English goalkeeper to put her side 1-0 up early on in the match.
However, England equalised in the 14th minute when Clio O’Malley found herself inside the circle and drove the ball into the net to make it 1-1.
With the scores level at half-time, England took the lead in the 42nd minute when Fran Tew’s short corner strike was deflected off a Scottish defender to make it 2-1.
Not to be outdone, Scotland were soon back on level terms in the 48th minute when Jenny Eadie cracked an unstoppable shot past the English goalkeeper from a penalty corner set-play.
As both sides pursued a winning goal, the game was tightly contested in midfield and remained on a knife edge for much of the second half. Unfortunately for Scotland, England nicked the winning goal eight minutes from full-time when Charlotte Burrows pounced to give her side a 3-2 victory.
Earlier in the day, Scotland U16 Girls also took to the field against England and despite a 2-0 defeat, Head Coach Bill Robson was pleased with his team’s performance, “I thought the team played very well and the players produced a positive performance against England today. We were on top of England for long spells throughout the match and I think we can count ourselves a bit unlucky. We managed to create two to three penalty corner chances and on another day the result may have been different.
“Tomorrow, we play the Dutch and having seen them in action against Germany today, the players will face a tough challenge. However, we take the learning points from the game today and look forward to the Netherlands on Saturday.”
Scotland found themselves 1-0 down at half-time thanks to a Erica Sanders before a reverse stick strike from Holly Hunt doubled the lead in the 62nd minute to make the final scoreline 2-0.
