Scottish Schools Senior Cup Finals

This Friday, 18 March, hundreds of hockey fans will be heading to Peffermill for the Senior Schools Cup Finals. After the thrilling Junior Schools Finals last week, it promises to be another action-packed day of youth hockey. The first of eight cup/plate finals start at 10am, culminating in the Boys Cup Final at 7.15pm.  You can find the schedule here: Senior Schools Finals Schedule_18Mar.

Senior Girls Cup and Plate

It’s been six months since the Schools Cups started, during which time we’ve had some really exciting knock-out matches. That was certainly the case in the Senior Girls Cup, where Jordanhill School won all their matches by a one-goal margin to qualify for the final. They beat Loretto 1-0, High School of Dundee 2-1, and Dollar Academy 1-0 in their semi-final.

Their opponents will be George Heriot’s School, who beat Mary Erskine’s 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the semi-final. This followed another penalty shoot-out victory against The High School of Glasgow, and an earlier win against Hutcheson’s.

In the Plate competition, The Glasgow Academy will meet Strathallan. The Academy saw off Loretto and St Columba’s in the last two rounds; and the Strath girls beat St George’s on penalties in their semi-final after a 3-0 win against Hutcheson’s. It promises to be a close match.

Senior Boys Cup and Plate

After their success in the Junior Boys Final, Fettes College are looking to add the Senior Boys Cup to their trophy cabinet.  Once again, their opponents will be George Watson’s College (GWC), who are seeking to regain the Cup they won in 2019.

After a bye in the first round, Fettes have had two tough matches against Robert Gordon’s (2-1) and Hutcheson’s (3-1) to reach the final. GWC knocked out Strathallan (2-1), Glenalmond (8-0) and The Edinburgh Academy 3-1 on penalties in the semi-final. It should be a cracking final.

The Plate will be contested by Strathallan and Robert Gordon’s College. The Strath boys beat The Glasgow Academy and Perth High School before a hard-fought 2-0 win at Boroughmuir/Balerno in the semi-final. Their Aberdonians reached the second round of the cup before losing to Fettes. Their excellent 3-2 win v Stewart’s Melville in the Plate was followed by a 6-1 win against Glenalmond in the semi-final.

Senior Girls Challenge Cup and Plate

Robert Gordon’s College will also be competing in the final of the new Senior Girls Challenge Cup.  They beat Galashiels Academy 4-1 and Wellington School 5-4 on penalties in Ayr after a 1-1 draw in their semi-final. They will bringing a large travelling support for their final against Kelvinside Academy. The Glasgow girls beat Marr College 2-1, Morrison’s Academy 2-1 and St Margaret’s 3-0 en-route to the final.

In the Challenge Plate Final, Morrison’s Academy will play Marr College. The Crieff girls had two hard-fought wins against Gordonstoun (4-2) and Trinity Academy (2-1) to reach the final. Troon’s finest had two cracking cup ties against Borders opposition, beating Peebles High School 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw, before a 2-1 semi-final win over Galashiels Academy.

Aspire Cup Finals

The day starts with our two Aspire Cup Finals, for teams who are building towards the Schools Cups. The format is different, with teams qualifying via tournaments back in October/November.

The boys’ final will be between Perth Academy and McLaren High School from Callander. They each went unbeaten to top their qualifying groups at Glenalmond.

The girls’ finalists are Kilgraston and Selkirk High School, who won their qualifying groups. Kilgraston edged out Aberdeen GS and Queen Victoria at Glenalmond; and the Borderers won all three of their matches at Peffermill.

Information for Spectators

These finals always attract a large crowd and there are limited parking spaces in and around the venue, with priority being given to coaches/minibuses. Our colleagues at Peffermill have asked spectators to please respect the neighbours and avoid parking in residential areas. Please use public transport where possible.

Admission is free, and there will be hot and cold food and drinks for sale.  Edinburgh University students will be fundraising for Cancer Research UK, including a raffle where you can win tickets to a Scotland hockey match at the Commonwealth Games!

The programme for the Finals can be downloaded here: Senior Schools Cup Final Programme

We are very grateful to Buena Vista Entertainments for sponsoring this season’s Schools Cup Finals. They will ensure that Peffermill is ‘rocking’, and Schools have provided ‘team songs’ to help encourage their young stars on their big day.
