Scottish Schools’ Cup Draws 2022-23
The draws for this season’s Scottish Schools’ Cups have been made – and we’ve got some cracking ties to look forward to! A total of 89 teams from 37 schools will play across the six schools’ competitions. And many more will be added when the Junior and Aspire Cup draws are made at the end of September.
Cup Draws
A few of the highlights are noted below, but you can find the full Cup draws and information on the respective pages on our website:
Senior Girls Cup
Holders, George Heriot’s start with a home tie against Glasgow Academy. Last season’s runners-up, Jordanhill, travel to Dollar Academy in possibly the tie of the round. Fettes College play St George’s School in an Edinburgh derby; and Strathallan host George Watson’s College in another great tie.
Senior Girls Challenge Cup
There will be two preliminary round matches: St Aloysius College v Kelso HS; and Lomond School v Marr College. In Round 1 holders Kelvinside Academy travel to last season’s Aspire Cup winners, Kilgraston. And runners-up Robert Gordon’s travel to the Borders to play Peebles HS. Albyn School are also making the same long journey from Aberdeen to play Galashiels Academy.
Senior Boys Cup
The first round has created two Edinburgh derbies, with Edinburgh Academy hosting Heriot’s, and Stewart’s Melville against Merchiston Castle. Hutchesons’ travel to Musselburgh to play Loretto; Robert Gordon’s play Fettes; and Balerno/Boroughmuir v Gordonstoun also promises to be an interesting tie. Holders, George Watson’s are one of three teams who have been drawn as Byes.
Junior Boys Cup
Last season’s Junior Plate finalists, Loretto and Edinburgh Academy have been drawn together. Gordonstoun host Hutchesons’; Stewart’s Melville play Robert Gordon’s; George Watson’s travel to Strathallan; and Glenalmond start their campaign against Heriot’s. The holders, Fettes College, have received a bye.
Junior Girls Cup
There are some fascinating local derbies in the Junior Girls Cup: The High School of Glasgow v Hutchesons’; George Heriot’s v Mary Erskine’s; George Watson’s v St George’s and Glenalmond v High School of Dundee. Last season’s finalists, Edinburgh Academy and Fettes have received the two Byes.
Junior Girls Challenge Cup
Earlston HS have a long trip to Gordonstoun and will probably be sharing a bus with their seniors, who also got the same draw. And Wellington will also have a long journey to play Robert Gordon’s in Aberdeen. Last season’s Plate winners, St Columba’s visit Kelso; and Jordanhill host Morrison’s Academy. Holders Peebles have a Bye to play Kelvinside or Selkirk HS.
Cup Format
All Cups are played on a knock-out basis, with losers in the early rounds competing in Plate competitions, so that all teams play a minimum of two matches. The Senior Cups are for S4-S6 players; and Junior Cups for S3 and younger. The top-16 Girls’ teams in both age groups (based on the past few seasons) are playing in the Cups; and all other teams are competing for the Challenge Cups. The Boys have one Senior and one Junior Cup due to having less teams.
This season’s finals will be held on Friday 10 March (Junior) and Friday 17 March 2023 (Senior).
