Scottish Hockey to host FIH Champions Challenge in Glasgow

Scottish Hockey is delighted to announce today that it has been successful in securing the rights from the International Hockey Federation (FIH) to host the FIH Champions Challenge at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre from 27 April-4 May 2014.
Following a bid submitted by Scottish Hockey earlier this year, the FIH Executive Board has approved the Event Evaluation Panel’s recommendation that Scotland be awarded the rights to host the competition.
Scott Baird, Scottish Hockey Chair, said, “We are hugely excited to be hosting the FIH Champions Challenge next year and we are very much looking forward to welcoming all the participating nations to play in this prestigious competition.
“This is a perfect opportunity for Scotland and the city of Glasgow to present and showcase top international hockey at a first class venue to our members, key stakeholders and the general public. With the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games hockey competition taking place at the very same venue only three months later, it is an ideal time to build anticipation and excitement among our supporters for what will be a fantastic time for hockey in this country.”
The women’s competition will include the following teams; Korea (currently 8th in the FIH World Ranking), USA (10th), South Africa (11th), India (12th), Belgium (13th), Spain (14th), Ireland (15th) and of course, Scotland (19th).
Callum McLeod, Scottish Hockey Performance Manager, added, “Hosting the FIH Champions Challenge will present the senior players with a great opportunity to play in an international hockey competition in front of a fervent home support.
“The players will also have the advantage of playing together on the new Glasgow National Hockey Centre pitch facilities before they take part in the Commonwealth Games three months later and are looking forward to it.
“We look forward to working with our partners to put on this competition.”
