Scottish Hockey launch ‘Safe Sport’

Scottish Hockey is thrilled to introduce ‘Safe Sport’, a comprehensive service designed to enhance safeguarding, health, and welfare

Throughout 2024, sport in Scotland has witnessed rapid advancements in child wellbeing and protection services. With increased awareness and significant updates, recognising the protection of young people and vulnerable adults, our efforts to safeguard our community have never been stronger.

Positive changes in governance and enhanced protection measures for children and vulnerable adults highlight the value of our collective work. Club and District Safeguarding Officers (Child Wellbeing and Protection Officers) and Committee Members with a remit for safeguarding have worked tirelessly to ensure the club environment is suitable for children, young people, and vulnerable adults.

With the support of our Safeguarding Officers, we have:

  • A safe workforce: Child Wellbeing and Protection Officer and Child Wellbeing and Protection in Sport Certified Coaches, Committee, and Volunteers.
  • Regulated officers: Those in a Regulated Role are appropriately appointed and have a PVG to work or volunteer with Children.
  • Improved governance: Clubs with updated safeguarding polices, PVG Contracts and Agreements in place, and a refreshed awareness of the importance governance has to play.
  • Improved web services: A space for Safe Sport and information to be shared, for safeguarding, concerns, and protecting vulnerable groups (PVG).

There is always space for improvement, but it is important to recognise the efforts of our volunteers in this – sometimes challenging – space.

‘Safe Sport at Scottish Hockey is a commitment to support our community in continuing to create an enjoyable, fun, and safe space to enjoy hockey and thrive.’ – Keith Macleod, Engagement Manager

The Scottish Hockey Safe Sport Working Group, charged with reviewing and improving the safeguarding and welfare practices in hockey, continue to meet regularly and push forward our combined efforts. With regular engagement and guidance from our partners at Children First and sportscotland, the improvements to policy, practice, and governance can only improve.
