Scottish Hockey is saddened to hear of the passing of George Guy
A talented player, coach and umpire in his own right, George was a proud member of Edinburgh Hockey Club and was instrumental in introducing hockey to countless youngsters in the city.
It was a natural step for him to progress onto coaching and managing the East District Youth squads for many years, and he became a widely respected President of East District Hockey.
He continued his playing with the Scottish Masters, and as his playing days came to an end, it was no surprise that he continued to be involved, and found himself managing and supporting his fellow ‘masters’ with gusto.
While that may have seemed like enough for most people, George was also a national level umpire, who umpired may competitions and events for Scottish Hockey over the years. He was equally generous with his time and expertise in mentoring and assessing umpires young and old to partake in that side of the game.
It was a measure of George’s enthusiasm, love of the sport, and ability to connect with others that his giving back to the sport ranged from supporting almost every tenet of the sport. From international games to ‘Stick it to Cancer’ fundraising tournaments, George’s enthusiasm for hockey extended to supporting everyone – young or old, player, coach or umpire, and the hockey community was privileged to know him.
Martin Shepherdson, Chair of Scottish Hockey added ” I knew George as a player (both as a team-mate and an opponent), umpire administrator, helper and friend. His enthusiasm for hockey and life in general was remarkable and his ability to help others was amazing. He will be sadly missed by the whole hockey community.”
We extend our sincere condolences to George’s family and friends at this difficult time.
