Scottish Hockey celebrates International Women’s Day

On International Women’s Day, Scottish Hockey recognises the need to Accelerate Action and highlight the importance of gender equality in our sport. While there is always much more to be done, we are delighted to recognise our responsibility to be at the forefront of this movement.

Scottish Hockey champions gender balance within its staff team and board. This balanced representation ensures diverse perspectives and opportunities for all. There are nine women leading areas of the organisation with six women in management positions. The Scottish Hockey board, which is currently recruiting with a focus on further diversity, has three women and four males in position.

Within our pathway programmes, female coaches and support staff are positively represented. Scottish Hockey pathway and BRAVE coaches have been instrumental in championing female athlete health, as well as performance and personal development, and their efforts inspire the younger generation to address and overcome the barriers and biases that women face in sports.

Further to this, female representation is strong in both our senior Scotland women’s and men’s squad management and support staff. The men’s squad for example has a 50/50 balance between women and men in its staff.

Scottish Hockey is dedicated to elevating the participation and achievement of women and girls in sport. By fostering an inclusive and supportive environment, we aim to empower the next generation of female athletes to reach their full potential. Currently 58% of Scottish Hockey’s membership is female, showing hockey’s inclusive and positive environment.

Scottish Hockey remains committed to driving progress and celebrating the achievements of women in our sport. Our national team athletes at all ages, and our umpires and officials, are wonderful ambassadors achieving exceptional things on the international stage. They inspire women and girls across the country.

We are also very proud of the Lead the Way programme, which currently is comprised mostly of females representing clubs and looking to develop in areas of leadership. Many female Lead the Way graduates have gone on to work full time in sport, and have leadership responsibilities within their clubs.

Over the last couple of years Scottish Hockey has worked to promote female health in hockey, and was recognised with an award at the Scottish Women in Sport Awards. We have formed valuable partnerships to offer education and discounted products in areas such as breast health and menstruation. We also just delivered a series of six free women’s health webinars, and our Women’s Health Working Group is actively planning more learning and support opportunities for the future.

There is much more work to do and Scottish Hockey is committed to continue to accelerate action to achieve gender equality, and support women across hockey in Scotland.
