Scottish Grand Masters teams start their preparation for European Cup in Glasgow
The Scotland national teams at O60, O65, and O70 age groups start their competitive programme of matches this weekend when they head to Cork for the annual Celtic Cup competition.
This will see the first Senior Grand Masters competition (O70) between Scotland and Wales. Scotland will field a strong side including the ‘experienced’ Freddie Lawson and are confident of giving the Welsh a real challenge over the two matches. Key roles will be expected from Andy Ferrol, Roy Crichton and Norrie Springford. The squad may also be boosted by the return from injury of Kieran McLernan.
The Great Grand Masters (O65) squad benefits from the additions of George Finlayson and Gordon Louden who will bring a depth and mobility to the midfield adding to the skills of Ken Moore and Doug Turner. The defence will once again be marshalled by Jim Chisholm and John Smith and the likely goal threats coming from the two Peters – Gordon and Robertson.
The Grand Masters (O60), whilst having a strong squad to defend the title they won last year in Lille, will face strong opposition especially from Ireland who have ‘inherited’ a few players from their O55 team and are playing at home. Nevertheless, Captain Ian Wilson leads a strong Scotland side which has also seen a few players step up from the O55 side. The addition of Anglos Ronnie Stott, Davie Rowlands and Ali Hay to the World Cup squad of 12 months ago, along with the introduction of powerhouse Arthur Robertson and goal machine Billy Taylor, gives strength across the team.
Following the Celtic Cup the teams have the Home Internationals in June in Swansea as a further warm up before Scotland hosts the Grand Masters Hockey European Cup in Glasgow 19th – 27th August.
