Scottish Cup quarter final action serves up big results

Western overcame the disappointment of yesterday`s draw with Clydesdale in the Premiership to see off rivals Grange 4-2 in the quarter-final of the Scottish Cup at Auchenhowie. Vishal Marwaha was a much happier Western coach with today`s performance against a side that is challenging them for the Premiership title.

Wildcats eased ahead with a direct penalty corner flick from Hamish Galt and their tally was doubled with another set piece conversion by Andrew McConnell. Fraser Heigh pulled one back for Grange with a penalty corner strike of his own, but any meaningful comeback was stifled with an open play goal from Galt again.

Just before the interval Albert Rowling pulled the score back to 3-2 with another set piece conversion. But the result was sealed in the third quarter when Fraser Moran scored to put the tie beyond Grange.

Edinburgh University also booked their place in the semi-final draw with a comfortable 3-0 win over Inverleith in another all-Premiership tie, the goals came from Keir Robb, Tom Cahalin and Hamish Imrie.

Second tier Gordonians` giant-killing exploits did not progress beyond the quarter-finals as they went down 4-2 to Premiership Dunfermline Carnegie at Countesswells.

A reverse stick shot by Cameron Scott opened the scoring for the Fifers, but Gordonians levelled by converting a penalty corner. Dunfermline started to apply some consistent pressure in the second quarter and were rewarded when Aidan McQuade made it 2-1 from a penalty corner.

The tie was effectively won in the third quarter, a cut back from the baseline was finished off by Magnus Ferrier. A low penalty corner drag flick by McQuade put Dunfermline out of sight at 4-1. The final quarter contained a number of cards and a consolation strike by the home side, but the Fifers emerged from the banana skin encounter with a comfortable victory and a place in the semi-final draw.

Hillhead also overcame second tier opposition beating Glasgow University 7-2 with Fraser Ward scoring a hat-trick, Andrew Duke got two while Yan Adams and Graeme Campbell got the others.

In the women`s cup Wildcats clawed their way into the semi-final draw with a comfortable 6-0 win over Erskine Stewarts Melville. However, ESM captain Kerrie Craig related an interesting turn of events. “I think we did really well considering I went in goals, I`m usually a striker, as our keeper was injured yesterday.”

Kerrie certainly did well reaching half-time at 0-0. But then the floodgates opened, pride of place goes to youngster Lucy MacMillan who scored twice with the other goals Amy Grassom, Alex Stuart, Kate Holmes and Olivia Finch.

Watsonians had little difficulty in progressing with a 7-0 win over GHK. There were doubles for Heather Tait, Sarah McKay and Emily Dark while Ailsa Small got the other goal.

But GHK captain Carly Bisset remarked: “We struggled in the second half with lots of injuries and not enough legs.” She then mentioned some key players Iona Reid, Sophie Aitchison, but most especially second eleven keeper Emma O`Neill. “She made a series of great saves, including a penalty flick, and our penalty corner defence saved three goal bound shots on the line.”

The Hillhead v Clydesdale Western game was not played today and will be arranged for a later date next week.
