Scots youngsters finally relegated after English defeat
VOLVO EUROPEAN JUNIOR NATIONS CHAMPIONSHIPS (MEN) – DEN
BOSCH (NED)
SCOTLAND 0 ENGLAND 5
Scotland`s under 21 side needed to beat England to stay
in Europe`s top flight, but in the end went down 5-0 to the auld
enemy in the European Nations Championships in Den Bosch and were
consequently relegated to the second division in two years
time.
The pressure was on the Scots youngsters when Spain beat Wales
6-2 in an earlier relegation pool game, a result that secured the
Spaniard`s safety.
The Scots had a mountain to climb when Ross Gilham-Jones opened
for the English in only nine minutes. When the same
player doubled the score four minutes later with another open play
goal, the writing was on the wall for the Scots, who in turn had no
real clear-cut chances of their own.
The Scots cause was not helped when key striker Alan Forsyth
spent two spells in the sin-bin, but the contest was effectively
over in 56 minutes with another Gilham-Jones goal for his
hat-trick. The English goalkeeper had only
two saves to make in the entire match, but Scotland`s best chance
fell to Glynhill Kelburne`s Ed Greaves but his touch to a cross was
not enough to direct the ball goalwards. In the closing ten
minutes England added another two goals to their tally, Andrew Bull
scored from a penalty corner and Phillip Roper added a fifth from
open play.
“We defended well for long spells but we just couldn`t keep the
English from scoring, while at the other end we created very few
chances for ourselves,” said Callum McLeod, Scotland`s manager.
