Scots women see off Ireland
SCOTLAND 3 IRELAND 1
(WOMEN)
Scotland`s women were in total control throughout as
they beat Ireland 3-1 in the second test match at Auchenhowie, part
of the final build-up for the FIH Champions Challenge in Dublin at
the end of the month, squaring the series as the Scots lost the
opening fixture 1-0 on Friday.
After Leigh Fawcett cleared some early danger, it was all
Scotland with Nikki Kidd the chief tormentor, she sent her first
shot over the bar, then her penalty corner effort brought the best
out of the Irish goalkeeper. But the opening goal was
only delayed a few minutes, a well-planned set piece move involving
Ali Bell and Kidd ripped open the Irish defence and the latter
finished by chipping the ball over the keeper.
An isolated Irish attack forced Amy Gibson into a good save, but
just on the interval the Scots doubled their score from another
penalty corner, the ball was slipped left to Aileen Davis and her
swept shot was diverted home by Bell.
Bell had two chances to add to the tally early in the second
half, the first was scrambled clear while her acute angled shot was
blocked by the Irish goalkeeper. The result was sealed
midway through the second half, a move involving Becky Ward and
Nicola Skrastin found Holly Cram in space and her reverse stick
shot was deflected home by Kerry Hall for Scotland`s
third.
Nikki Lloyd had a good chance to add another but again the
keeper was on hand to save. The Irish got a consolation
in the final minute when they managed to scramble the ball
home.
FLOTTBECKER 3 SCOTLAND 3 (MEN)
Scotland finished their tour of Germany with a fighting 3-3 draw
with Hamburg side Flottbecker, the final part of their preparation
for the first round of the World League in Portugal later this
month.
The Scots went ahead in only four minutes when Iain Scholefield
scored with a fierce reverse stick shot from the top of the
circle. But the Germans retaliated and were 2-1 up at
the interval through a penalty corner strike and a
breakaway.
The Scots cause looked a bit forlorn when Flottbecker made it
3-1 with another set piece strike. Scotland fought back
and chances fell to Ian Moodie, Kenny Bain, Alan Forsyth and Willie
Marshall. But in 54 minutes the Scots finally
pulled one back, Niall Stott switched the ball to Bain at a penalty
corner and he scored with a straight shot.
With ten minutes left Bain again was involved when the Scots
finally equalised, he cut in from the right and unleashed a fierce
low drive from an acute angle. A victory was on the
cards in the final minute, but Alan Forsyth`s reverse stick strike
flew over the bar.
PRESIDENTS CUP
Grange won 5-4 in a ding-dong affair against Clydesdale at
Titwood. The Edinburgh side marched into an early two
goal lead through Martin Kelly and Peter McCosh. The
home side recovered their composure and Ciaran Crawford rattled the
crossbar at a penalty corner. Grange retaliated with a
third goal, again through Kelly following a pass from Adam
Fallis.
Clydesdale were always dangerous and Gordon Amour pulled one
back with a deceptively slow drag flick at a penalty corner, and
just on half time Crawford found the net from another set piece for
a 3-2 score to Grange at the interval.
The Glasgow side marched into a 4-3 lead early in the second
half through Ross Macpherson and Raymond Wrightson, but back came
Grange, Rob Barr equalised with a penalty corner drag flick that
went in off the crossbar. The winner came from Kelly
who completed his hat-trick, the move was initiated by Cammie
Fraser, leaving Kelly to round the keeper to score.
Western Wildcats gave Watsonians a taste of what the top flight
may have to offer with a 9-0 victory at Auchenhowie.
The usual suspects Douglas Simpson and Scott McCartney both notched
a hat-trick and the other goals came from Niall McLeod, Niall
Sommerville and a 40 yard own goal from Steven Percy which was
touched into the net by the Watsonians goalkeeper.
Inverleith made it hard work for themselves by scoring only one
of their 13 awarded penalty corners, but emerged 3-2 winners
against newly promoted AAM Gordonians. The Edinburgh
side`s goals came from Derek Salmond, John Harris and Patrick
Christie from a set piece.
