Scots stuff Turkey in Prague

WORLD LEAGUE ROUND 1 – PRAGUE – 14-19 AUGUST
2012

SCOTLAND  12  TURKEY  1

Scotland had the honour of opening the inaugural World
League and did it in some style with a 12-1 crushing of a
shell-shocked Turkey side in Prague, a hat-trick by Sam Judge was
the highlight of the victory.

It took the Scots just 11 minutes to get on the score sheet and
it came from a direct strike by Catriona Ralph at a penalty
corner.   The second was also from a set piece, this time
Nikki Kidd`s initial shot was saved by the goalkeeper, but Aileen
Davis netted the rebound.   The Scots went three up
following a flowing move involving Morag McLellan and Ali Bell, the
latter cut the ball back to Judge who swept it into the empty
net.

It was one-way traffic, Amy Gibson in the Scotland goal was
never called into action, and as the Turkish defence failed to
clear the danger, Bell picked up the loose ball and fired it into
the net.   A Scots’ penalty routine didn’t go to plan, but
Becky Merchant retrieved the situation at the top of the circle,
her reverse stick pass found an unmarked Judge who poked the ball
home for the fifth.   The half finished at 6-0 with Ralph
netting a carbon copy of the opening strike from Scotland`s eighth
penalty corner.

The goal avalanche continued after the interval, Holly Cram
turned the keeper and passed it on to Judge for the simple task of
rolling the ball into the empty net.  Although the Turks
pulled one back from a set piece, the first “own goal” in
international hockey was scored when a long ball from Kidd was
deflected into the net by a Turkish defender for 8-1.

The deluge continued unabated, Bell made it nine after a
pass by Linda Clement, Lloyd was left with an open goal after good
work by Cram and Vikki Bunce, there followed another “own goal”,
and Cram completed the scoring with a fierce strike from the top of
the circle.
