Scots qualify for next round of World League
WORLD LEAGUE ROUND 1 – PRAGUE – 14-19 AUGUST
2012
SCOTLAND 4 FRANCE 0
Scotland`s women beat second bottom side France 4-0 in
their final match of the first round of the World League, a result
that leaves Gordon Shepherd`s charges in third spot in the table on
goal difference behind Italy and Belarus after all three teams
finished on 12 points.
Although coach Gordon Shepherd will undoubtedly be disappointed
his side did not finish in pole position, but with the top four
moving on, Scotland easily qualified for the second round of the
competition – that was the bottom line for the event.
The combination of missed chances and some decent goalkeeping
kept the score down to a single strike in the first
half. Good work from Susan McGilveray at the top of the
circle created the opening in 16 minutes, her reverse sweep pass
found Holly Cram at the left post and she had the simple task of
bundling the ball home. The Scots should have scored
again five minutes later, McGilveray`s drive hit a post and Cram`s
rebound shot was then saved by the keeper.
The Scots doubled their lead three minutes into the second half
with a low drive by Nikki Kidd. In 41 minutes France`s first
penalty corner was brilliantly saved by a diving Amy Gibson, the
Scots mounted a quick counter-attack, Ali Bell cut the ball back to
Cram who made it 3-0 with a fierce reverse stick
shot.
Further chances fell to Vikki Bunce, Kidd and Cram, but all went
wide of the target. In 56 minutes Grove Menzieshill`s under
21 goalkeeper Nicki Cochrane came on in place of Amy
Gibson. The fourth goal came ten minutes from the end,
the French defence failed to clear their lines, the ball fell to
Sam Judge at the top of the circle and she drove it past the French
keeper. A final chance fell to Cram in the closing
minute but the Milne Craig Western striker failed to claim her
hat-trick.
