Scots lose to Spain in Den Bosch

Scotland will now contest the relegation pool for the
closing cross-over games of the European Junior Nations
Championships after losing 4-2 to Spain in the second pool match
yesterday in Den Bosch.
Despite two defeats, the Scots cause was not helped when Germany
and Belgium drew 2-2 in the other pool encounter.
In even opening exchanges, it was Spain who took the lead with a
goal from Marc Bolto. But the Scots retaliated,
the penalty corner routine broke down with a miss-trap, the ball
was moved on from Alan Forsyth to Michael Bremner who proceeded to
slam it into the bottom corner of the net for the
equaliser.
The Scots had chances early in the second half, Ben Peterson`s
deflection was blocked by the Spanish goalkeeper while a penalty
corner shot from Fraser Sands was deflected wide by an out-running
defender. But the Spanish turned the screw, captain Alejandro
de Frutos effectively sealed the result with two set piece goals in
as many minutes. The score advanced to 4-1 when Albert
Beltran scored from open play for Spain.
However, despite being down to ten players, the Scots youngsters
never gave up and grabbed a consolation four minutes from the end,
a move involving Forsyth and Lee Morton found Ed Greaves and his
cut back was dispatched into the net by Chris Duncan.
From time to time the Scots were forced to play with ten
players, there were yellow cards for Forsyth and Bremner while Adam
Walker picked up a red card with seven minutes remaining.
“There were a lot of positives in the game and I felt the squad
put in a good performance, but Spain took their chances at penalty
corners at the crucial point in the match. The fighting
spirit of the side was evident when we notched a goal with only ten
players on the pitch,” said Graham Moodie, Scotland`s coach.
