Scots beat Uhlenhorster
UHLENHORSTER 2 SCOTLAND 4
Scotland`s men made a promising start to their final
build-up for the first round of the World League with a 4-2 win
over top German Bundesliga side Uhlenhorster this
evening.
Kenny Bain had an early chance but his effort went wide, yet the
Germans reached the interval a goal ahead. Two minutes
into the second half Gavin Byers had the ball in the net, but
unfortunately the foot rather than the stick was the “scorer”,
Five minutes later the Scots were level following a low strike
by penalty corner expert Dan Coultas. But within two
minutes Uhlenhorster were ahead again, this was the first “own
goal” that the Scots had conceded in international hockey, a lob
into the circle was diverted into the goal by the glove of keeper
Alan Dick
Byers again had a chance for the Scots but his effort bought out
a double save from the German goalkeeper. The Germans
continued to retain the lead as the game progressed, but with seven
minutes remaining a Michael Bremner shot was deflected home by
Kelburne clubmate Gareth Hall for the equaliser.
The Scots pressed in the final minutes, a reverse stick shot
from Kenny Bain went wide of the target following a pass from Ross
Stott. But with a minute to go Willie Marshall in midfield
found Bain, he squared the ball to Gordon McIntyre who scored with
a firm shot from the top of the circle to put the Scots 3-2
ahead.
As the Germans pressed for the equaliser and put their resources
upfield, Niall Stott lent a long overhead into the Uhlenhorster
circle and Alan Forsyth latched on to the ball and made it 4-2 with
a cheeky lob over the goalkeeper.
Meanwhile, at Titwood Clydesdale were unlucky to lose 1-0 to
visiting English premier league side Loughborough in the first game
of a four club mini-tournament, after holding the English side to a
goalless draw for most of the contest, the visitors finally broke
the deadlock in the closing minutes.
