Scotland’s Masters & Grand Masters well represented at EuroHockey Masters Championship
Scotland Men’s and Women’s Masters fraternity will be represented by no less than eight teams at the EuroHockey Masters Championships in England starting on Saturday 22 August.
While Scotland Senior Women battle it out at the EuroHockey Nations Championships at Lee Valley, there are no fewer than sixteen Masters and Grand Masters competitions being played at the same time, featuring 92 teams across three venues:
- EuroHockey Women’s Masters 40+, 45+, 50+ and 55+ Cups (Old Loughtonians)
- EuroHockey Women’s Grand Masters 60+ Cup (Old Loughtonians)
- EuroHockey Men’s Masters 40+, 45+, 50+ and 55+ Cups (St. Albans)
- EuroHockey Men’s Grand Masters 60+. 65+, 70+ 75+ Cups (Southgate)

All of the tournaments are run under the auspices of the International Masters Hockey Association, IMHA (Over 40s to Over 55s) and World Grand Masters Hockey Association, WGMA (Over 60s to Over 75s).
These organisations are recognised by the International Hockey Federation (FIH) who work closely with them.
All this is part of the FIH’s vision of the family of hockey stretching from young children all the way up to grandparents and even great grandparents taking part in the sport they love.
For the first time, Scotland Senior Grand Masters (Over 70) are competing in a major international tournament at Southgate, along with their younger counterparts Scotland Grand Masters (Over 60).
A second team, Scottish Thistles, bolstered by a number of guest players, is playing in the European Grand Masters Tournament Trophy, also at Southgate.
All three teams are in action on the first day of the tournament, on Saturday 22 August, with Scottish Thistles leading the way against Netherlands 2nds in the morning, after which Scotland Grand Masters take on Germany and finally in the evening Scotland Senior Grand Masters play against Netherlands. New coach Murray Paton will have a busy day looking after all three teams.
Scotland Grand Masters are in Pool 1 with France, Germany, Netherlands and Wales. Scotland Senior Grand Masters play in a round robin against England, Germany and Netherlands. Squad: Alan Bremner, Ernie di Rollo, Ian Downie, Andy Ferrol, Fred Lawson, Kieran McLernan, David Margerison, Doug Morrice, Donald Paterson, Tim Pollard (GK), Robbie Robertson, Colin Tucker, Sandy Weir. Manager: Mhairi Ferrol.
Scottish Thistles are in Pool 1 of the Over 60 Tournament Trophy with Alliance, England LX Red and Netherlands 2. Squad: Paul Bateson, Jon Beale, Donald Dunbar, Ian Dunbar, Colin Gallacher (Captain), Richard Higham (GK), Tim Lorimer, Neil Macleod, Ian McCreath, Brian de Mattos, John Michalik, Dick Pearce (GK), Keith Raper, Tony Walker, Neil Ward, Peter Westbrook. Managers: George Finlayson and Neil Mackenzie.
Scotland is also represented by Norrie Springford as an umpire and Brian Moore as a Technical Official.
Scotland Women Masters play in the Over 40 and Over 50 age groups, while the Masters men have teams in all four age groups O40+, 45+, 50+ and 55
