Scotland`s juniors lose again in Den Bosch
VOLVO EUROPEAN JUNIOR NATIONS CHAMPIONSHIPS (MEN) – DEN
BOSCH (NED) – 26 AUGUST to 01 SEPTEMBER 2012
SCOTLAND 1 BELGIUM 7
Scotland under 21`s pool was always going to be a tough
assignment, and so it proved as the Scots youngsters went down 7-1
to Belgium in the final pool match of the Volvo European Junior
Nations Championships in Den Bosch yesterday to finish bottom of
the group.
Scotland and Spain will now contest the relegation pool over the
weekend, while Belgium and Germany, the latter beat Spain 3-2 in an
earlier contest, move on to the semi-finals.
With the Scotland squad down to 15 players following the one
match suspension given to Adam Walker after his red card against
Spain on Tuesday, and Belgium hoping to pip Germany on goal
difference, thereby avoiding hosts Netherlands in the semi-final,
the Scots were always up against it.
Scotland went behind in only five minutes when Belgian captain
Loick Loypaert put his side in front. The Scots were
soon back on level terms through Grove Menzieshill`s Alasdair
Irvine, the move was started by Peter Baldwin who switched the play
to the right hand side, Ed Greaves and Alan Forsyth proceeded to
open up the Belgian defence, leaving Irvine to volley the cut back
past the Belgian goalkeeper.
The talented Belgians turned the screw before the interval,
Mathew Cobbaert scored twice in four minutes, then Luypaert made it
4-1 from a penalty corner.
The Belgians added three more in the second half, Alexander
Hendrickx from a penalty corner, Luypaert notched his hat-trick and
Gaetan Perez added a seventh from open play in the final two
minutes. Belgium might have scored more but for some
brilliant saves from Sean Hadfield in the Scotland goal. The
Scots created a few telling breakaway moves through Hamish Imrie,
Lee Morton and Greaves, but no clear-cut chances
emerged.
