Scotland youth squads announced to play Four Nations in Belgium and Nottingham
The Scotland Aspiring girls’ and boys’ squads have been announced for the Four Nations tournament taking place in Leuven, Belgium from 7–10th April. While the Scotland Emerging girls’ and boys’ squads have been named to play a Four Nations in Nottingham over the same weekend.
In Leuven the Scots will take on Belgium, Germany and Spain at the tournament is they kick-start their 2023 campaign.
Scotland Aspiring Boys’ are in action on Saturday 8th April against Belgium at 13:30; Sunday 9th April against Germany at 11:30; and on Monday 10th April against Spain at 10:00.
At 14:00 on Saturday 8th April Scotland Aspiring Girls’ play Belgium before playing Germany on Sunday 9 April at 13:30 and then Spain at 10:00 on Monday 10th April.
Both squads are building towards the U18 EuroHockey Championships this summer where they will take on the top teams in Europe.
Scotland Aspiring Girls’ Head Coach Keith Smith said, “Three games in three days against this level of opposition is tough, especially so early on in our programme, but these are exactly the types of games we know we need to keep improving – both as preparation for the U18 European Championships in summer, and to keep lifting the standards of our international players even further in years to come.
“It’s great that the top European Nations are working more closely together in the interests of player development, and that we now have the opportunity to play more frequently against the best teams each year as a result.”
The emerging squads are also in action in Nottingham this weekend. On Saturday 8 April Scotland Emerging Girls take on England at 10:00 before the emerging boys take on England at 15:00.
Then on Sunday 9 April at 10:00 Scotland Emerging Girls’ play The Netherlands, then at 15:00 Scotland Emerging Boys also play The Netherlands.
Finally on Monday 10 April Scotland Emerging Girls play Spain at 09:45 before Scotland Emerging Boys’ play the Spanish at 11:45.
Scotland Emerging Boys’ Head Coach, Alan Wall, said, “Playing for Scotland is always a special achievement and for those who have the opportunity to represent their country for the first time will be a special moment.
“I’m very excited for the players selected for the Four Nations who will have the opportunity to challenge themselves against some of the best young players in Europe. The opportunity to be play against strong opposition early in the programme will set a standard for the rest of the year and help us identify key areas to focus on.”
Scotland Emerging Girls’ Head Coach Emma Pate said, “Playing in a competition like the Four Nations has been a long time coming; we have been working hard over the last five years to get these young National players the opportunity to compete against some of the best nations in the sport. And it’s finally here! The players and the coaching staff are ready and are feeling excited about travelling down to Nottingham and competing against England, Holland, and Spain.
“The players are in a great place, having done the hard work in training over the last few months, these final few days are about smoothing out the finer details and allowing the players the opportunity to taper towards what will be a very demanding three days of hockey.”
