Scotland women to play Spain in Valencia
The Scotland Women’s National Team will travel to Valencia for three test matches against Spain as part of preparation for the FIH World Cup Qualifiers in March.
The first game will be played on Tuesday 20th January at 18:45 before they meet again on Thursday 22nd January at 13:30, with the last game on Friday 23rd January at 12:15.
The matches kick start another exciting year for the squad with the 2026 Women’s FIH World Cup Qualifiers in Hyderabad, India in March.
Competing alongside Scotland in India will be England; India; Scotland; Korea; Italy; Uruguay; Wales; and Austria. The teams finishing first, second, and third will secure their place at next year’s FIH World Cup. The highest world-ranked team among those finishing in fourth place in each event will be the seventh team to qualify.
The Scots ended 2025 with a 2-1 victory over Ireland in Dublin to round off an excellent year for the team that included a fifth place finish at Nations Cup in Chile, which boosted the team into 15th in the FIH world rankings in March, and then a sixth spot finish at the EuroHockey Championship in Monchengladbach back in August.
Three tough matches against Spain presents an excellent test to start the year ahead of the qualifiers in March. The home side is ranked fifth in the world and has already qualified for the World Cup after winning bronze at the EuroHockey Championship in 2025.
Head Coach Chris Duncan said, “After a good quality physical block, we are all looking forward to being back on the pitch as we begin our final preparations for the world cup qualifier in India at the beginning of March. After good tests against Belgium and Ireland at the beginning of December, finishing with a good win over Ireland, it’s great to get the opportunity for competitive matches against such a good Spanish side in Valencia.
“Spain will bring a similar style to some of our opponents in India, which is great preparation, and we know that each match will be challenging as we look to develop further and iron out some elements of our game ahead of an exciting two months.”
