Scotland women strike four in win over England Dev in Bowdon
Scotland women stepped up their performance against England Development with an excellent 4-1 victory at the Bowdon Triangular.
The Scots started the game fast and did a great job of pressing and winning the ball high up the pitch.
It was in the second quarter when the deadlock was broken. A long corner was beautifully deflected into the circle by Katherine Holdgate for Ava Wadsworth to fire home a sublime first time finish into the top corner for 1-0 to Scotland.
England Dev struck back on the stroke of half time. A slack pass was punished when the English took advantage of a one-v-one opportunity to level the scores at the break.
A tactical tweak at half time saw Scotland up the tempo in the third quarter and they were rewarded by goals. An Amy Costello penalty corner was stopped on the line resulting in a stroke, which Costello dispatched with ease to make it 2-1.
Costello was at it again soon after with a powerful penalty corner strike into the corner to put some daylight between the teams at 3-1.
A well-earned, and well-executed, fourth goal finished off the scoring. A penalty corner routine saw a slick switch of play resulting in a clinical finish by Katie Birch for 4-1.
There were standout performances from Connie Roxburgh; Mille Steiger; and Fiona Burnet in this contest. Scotland had further chances but there would be no further goals and the team headed north with a solid 4-1 win.
Head Coach Chris Duncan said, “We played much better today. We had much to build on after yesterday’s game and it’s really pleasing to see how much we stepped up today – the second game in 24 hours. It’s nice to win the match, but even nicer to play so well. We were much better as a team today and stepped forward really well, and it’s very pleasing to see the progress we’re making as we build towards to the Euros in a couple of months time.”
