Scotland Women retain Nations Cup status with win over Canada
Scotland 2-0 Canada
Scotland women retained their FIH Nations Cup status with a 2-0 win over Canada in Santiago, Chile. Scotland will now play in tomorrow’s 5th-6th place playoff against Japan after goals from Sarah Jamieson and Ellie Mackenzie secured the win.
The first chance of the game came through penalty corner to Scotland, and Amy Costello, winning her 150 combined cap, blasted toward goal only to be denied by the keeper’s leg guards, and the ball was hooked clear with Charlotte Watson lurking.
Scotland had the Canadians pinned back and their high press saw them camped around the Canada circle, but were unable to take advantage of the four penalty corners they won.
In the second quarter Scotland’s sixth penalty corner saw Costello return the ball to the injector, Watson, for a strike at goal but it was saved at the near post and danger averted.
Despite Scotland’s dominance Canada came very close to opening the scoring. A mis-trap at Scotland’s tenth corner saw Canada burst forward and a far post deflection went narrowly wide of the gaping Scotland goal.
Scotland ended the quarter with 15 penalty corner attempts, and vastly more ball possession, but no goals.
Four minutes into the second half Scotland finally got a deserved goal. Sarah Jamieson received the near the right baseline and cut back inside to create an angle to strike at goal, then crashed the ball into the bottom left corner for 1-0.
Scotland’s pressing caused Canada all sorts of problems and it eventually led to the second goal. Blue shirts piled into the Canada circle trying to force the ball over the line until Bronwyn Shields teed up Ellie Mackenzie to shoot low and hard into the bottom left corner. 2-0.
An attack down the left saw the ball sent to the far post for Fran Lonergan but it evaded her stick and zipped clear.
The game went from end-to-end in the closing stages with both teams hungry for goals but it would end 2-0 and a solid win for Scotland.
