Scotland women lose second test match to France in Marseille

Scotland women lost 4-1 in the second match of a three-match test series in Marseille. Charlotte Watson grabbed Scotland’s only goal of the match as they set up for a final showdown on Saturday to complete the series.

It was an even opening quarter with both sides enjoying some attacking opportunities, with neither side making the breakthrough.

In the second quarter the hosts bagged a couple of goals. First, Marie Simon opened the scoring with a deflection on the left side at a penalty corner, before Eve Verzura made it 2-0 from another penalty corner deflection.

Scotland started the second half well and before long Charlotte Watson pulled one back in the third quarter from the penalty spot to make it 2-1.

From a corner the ball was slipped from the far castle to the near castle, then Amy Costello flicked the ball, which was stopped on the line by a defender’s body, resulting in the stroke. Watson stepped up and buried it to the goalkeeper’s right.

France struck back and Verzura was on hand against to score her second, and France’s third, penalty corner of the contest to make it 3-1.

Yohanna Lhopital finished the scoring in the final quarter to make it 4-1 and give the hosts a good victory.

Head Coach Chris Duncan said, “We competed better in spells, but lacked the intensity in our ball winning, and the cutting edge in our on the ball play, which has been so important as part of our character in the past year.

“We know that whilst we played better in the second half, we have more to show and give on Saturday. This is about building not just for this year, but for the long-term, and this is part of our journey. The work done here will help push us forward towards where we want to be. We will debrief and learn for Saturday to try and put on a show that characterises who we want to be.”
