Scotland women draw with Spain in Valencia test game 1
Spain 1-1 Scotland
Scotland women drew 1-1 with Spain in the first match of a three game test series in Valencia. Fiona Burnet found the net for Scotland in the contest.
Scotland made a bright start to the contest. Firstly, a lovely flowing move down the left almost led to Scotland scoring at the right post but couldn’t get the final touch.
The Scots took the game to Spain early in the contest, and could have scored, but it was Spain that took the lead. A quick free hit saw the Spaniards break into the circle on the right hand side to find the bottom right corner for 1-0.
Scotland came out fast in quarter two and equalised. The Tartan Hearts built up through the backline and a forward pass down the left side saw the Scots break in and feed Fiona Burnet, who received the ball beautifully, and smashed it into the bottom left corner for 1-1.
In the second half Scotland adapted to Spanish pressure, and Lucy Harris, playing her first game, made an impressive save at a penalty corner, followed up by another from open play.
In the final quarter Scotland pressed and got a grip of the game; Heather McEwan and Charlotte Watson both came close to finding the net. A late Jess Buchanan save at a penalty corner denied the late Spain winner and resulted in a 1-1 draw.
Head Coach Chris Duncan said, “There’s much to be pleased about as we start to prep for the World Cup Qualifiers. We played with good intensity and were physical, there’s lessons for us about being mentally prepared to play our style, but we’re happy to come out with the result and it’s a positive performance to build on.”
