Scotland women draw in Belfast
A young Scotland women’s squad drew 2-2 with Ireland development squad in Belfast in the first of a three match series against Ireland. Tomorrow the Scots face the Ireland senior side following the positive opening performance from Scotland’s young squad.
Ireland started very well and Scotland struggled to get a foothold in the game, but dug deep to battle hard in the contest.
The Scots went 1-0 down right before half time through a penalty corner goal for Ireland.
At half time the Scots regrouped and came out strong. Before long, Scotland equalised.
A swift attack down the left saw an attempt at goal rebound off the goalkeeper and McKenzie Bell was on hand to mop up at the right post to make it 1-1.
Scotland worked hard to win the ball high up the pitch and caused the home side problems with quick restarts in and around the D.
Then Scotland took the lead. Emily Dark put Scotland ahead with a fierce shot into the bottom right corner to make it 2-1.
Sophie Hinds put in an exciting performance and Amber Murray made some important saves in the contest. Sarah Jamieson and Eve Pearson also led the team well with solid leadership performances.
The young Scots tired towards the end and Ireland rallied to equalise through another penalty corner strike to make it 2-2, which is how the contest ended.
Tomorrow Scotland come up against the Ireland senior squad for the second of the three match test series.
Head Coach Chris Duncan said, “I’m immensely proud of the performance from such a young squad, with so many debutants, and it’s a great developmental opportunity to blood the young players emerging from the U21s.
“There’s things to work on but we’re very pleased with the learning and development we’ve seen already in this series. It’s been a positive night.”
